Yes, it seems for many people all the packets detour through Dallas on their way to Houston.    (This happens to me, too, on the west coast.)

I am working with the hosting service to replace the new Houston server with an equivalent one in Dallas instead.

We are still negotiating... it is not working out to be as simple as I would have hoped.

fanny - to be fair what i heard your problem was is that your isp (comcast) are a bunch of cheap asses and will do whatever they can to keep all the traffic on their network for as long as possible so they dont have to pay other people to use their network/router space.

But yeah, 18 hops when you live in the same city is fucking retarded, but i believe its your isp's fault, and not the hosting service.

for a specfic destination (tastyspleen) each hop chooses the route (what hop to send to), based on automous systems.  For example GE would be an autonomous system with number 3, Microsoft 2, TimeWarner 3000, etc.  As routes get propogated through the internet (via automous systems), the path is updated.  So the update on how to get to tastyspleen looks like this (AS1,AS10,AS15,AS1787).  It's distance vector routing.  Unless alerted, the route (next hop) is chosen based ont the fewest AS numbers in the AS_PATH field of the update.  It doesn't necessarily have anything whatsoever to do with physical distance.  

Comcast could improve the service by peering with the provider tastyspleen uses at closer physical distances, and making sure the new route is taken.  I'm not sure if they want to keep trafifc on their network so much, because at some point it still has to go off their network.  It's possible in certain circumtances that one ISP will make the other pay to connect.  I'm not exactly sure of the polictics of their peering, I belive they're Tier1, which means they are connected to every other Tier1 provider, and the relationship is mutual and free.

also, when you advertises routes, you can try and make one route (say one that is lower latency from houston) look better than the other, not sure if anything could be done here to help.  like say to get to tastyspleen, you can either go through Level3, TimeWarner, or Comcast.  If the Level3 routing is better for gamers, advertise the Level3 route as better.  This isn't done at a small scale (routes to only a small number of hosts), because the large providers filter out small routes, and only accept nothing smaller than /24 (which is 255 hosts).

Krenz, i don't work at GE, I used to.  yeah, thought it was a cool place. I did networks and they have a very nice network.  It was cool to see what the company was actually doing, like where I worked they sold power systems.  Now the power systems are intwined with voice/data networks, so I guess networks/IT is even more directly involved with what they are selling.
