Can I play Quake2 in surround sound?

yes and no
quake2 was not made for surround, so it wont work like newer games
however, depending on your card and drivers
you can sorta fake it with CMSS or CMSS2 if they support it

r1q2 also has some support for 3d sound, but its not all that great
i personally dont use it myself

aprq2 has alsa support, along with eax and whatnot, with all the capabilities those two drivers pertain.

2.1 is ok with me, the BFG sounds awesome with my sub, lol (Jamo550) I can hear what I need to hear, bring on the guass gun, the violator and the explosive shotgun!
