The tx.tastyspleen.net servers seem to have a slight lag/skipping effect..

Since we've had players using the railztdm and NAiL servers more often in the past weeks, a few people have noticed a strange skipping effect to the player movement on occasion, and more than a few have noted a strange lag between the time that you click the mouse and the moment that the railgun actually fires, which is only noticeable on the 72.232.228.186 box..

For some people, the effect has been so pronounced that it made playing very difficult.

I ran a couple traceroutes from different locations on the west coast, to see if it was a router over here causing it, or if it was something located in texas, as this laggy shooting seems to affect people from different sides of the country, and I was hoping to pinpoint a cause.

On every box that I tried I got "timed out" pings from one address that was always one hop before the server's IP.

I'm not exactly sure how we would go about fixing this, or who we should contact to have them go kick the router in the ass and reset it, but I thought I should bring this to Gator's attention, and I couldn't find him on IRC..

It might be the network, but I wonder if it could be the system hitting its pagefile.  It's running enough servers that some are partially swapped to disk - although, frankly, it looks like there SHOULD be enough RAM.

As an experiment I've raised just the railztdm and NAiL servers to "High" priority.  Please let me know if those particular servers are now any smoother or not?

edit: Just tried out Railztdm in a 1v1 and it seemed much smoother.
I ran around on NAiL a bit too, shooting off the railgun and jumping in the areas where I had noticed the odd movement before and they seem to be better. I'll keep you updated.. so far it's looking good.

Just the tx. servers? Wow do people bitching on RA2 about package loss... I don't experience it but a lot have been lately. They want to get the server moved to Chicago where some TS tdm server is?

EDIT maybe not... every time I do a tracerout everything times out.  every single time.

For what it's worth, traceroute depends on routers sending ICMP Time Exceeded packets, which they can be trivially configured not to do.  Timeouts in a traceroute aren't likely a good indicator of what's causing lag; it'd likely be more useful to ping a given router and compare the average and maximum RTT (assuming it's not ignoring pings).

not for me.  Something in my XP install is MAJORLY FUBAR.  I get random network cable "disconnects", all 'net activity stops randomly, games hit insane huge lag for no reason for a random ammount of time, ping's don't work all the time, can't to a tracerout past my modem.

All this works just fine in Linux, the Win2k box, the DS & Wii, so it's my frikken XP install. 

I hate XP.

well... vanilla I hate the maps but lots of ppl there so that makes up for the maps i guess
