Map pack re pack

Would it be possible to have the map pack in .rar format instead of .zip? I've downloaded it a few times on different computers and still can't open it  . Get a corrupt archive message.

And downloading the maps before going in game really blows.

those packs are very very outdated
if that does happen they should also be updated with the newest stuff from the past 2 years hehe

Hmm, that's strange.  I wonder if maybe it really did become corrupt at some point?

Although rar is a capable compression scheme, I avoid it because the code is proprietary.  Zip doesn't compress as well, but it's faster (takes less CPU to compress/decompress), and the code is totally open and ubiquitous.

So I don't plan to use rar format.  However if the zip archives have become corrupted I'll definitely fix them..

And downloading the maps before going in game really blows.

BTW, if you're playing on vanilla or mutant and you're using r1q2 you should be seeing fast HTTP downloads.  (Maps download maybe 5 to 10 times faster.)

Anyway... The map packs need to be updated either way, so I'll put it on my TODO list.

Perhaps maybe create some PAR2's for the zips, in case some people's downloads still get corrupted.  As there is always that possibility, though rare, it can still happen.

R1Q2 bugs out my audio if I recall correctly. Got all the packs except map since it won't work, so at least I won't have to wait for all the pcx and tga files to download. Those uncompressed just fine. Map pack is corrupt thou, anyone else tried to download and open it to see if I'm just special or it really is broken ?

I just d/l'd the "all-maps.zip" and all was fine

Alrighty... I've rebuilt the all-maps.zip archive.

Now includes ALL maps currently known to the server.  The zip file is now about 650 megs. 

(Next on the TODO list... move these files to a server with faster download speed... )

That's a known issue I think that's fixable with a quick in-game setting.....can't remember what it is now but I'm sure somebody here knows what it is.  I don't understand why everybody doesn't use R1Q2.  It's great.

No, haven't updated the textures and envs yet.

But that's silly to say it's pointless to update the maps archive regardless. 

It's over a gigabyte of map data (650 megs compressed) that you no longer have to download in-game.  Lots of maps re-use existing textures and envs anyway.  And for the textures and envs you may occasionally be missing, at least you didn't have to download the map.
