My Quake 2 is sluggish
« on: October 28, 2007, 12:06:30 PM »
This has been going on for a while now. At least 2 years. Weapons change slowly, I seem to stick to walls, jumps don't happen etc. Everytime I connect to Vanilla the ping is reasonable (70's and lately 60's) but something don't feel right. It's as if I have a ping of around 120. Anyway I was just goofing off with Eraser bot, experimenting with some settings today and this even felt slow. I looked at my ping which is usually 10 and under and it was as high as 40. I attached a demo showing how it changes (the ping - and hence the response). Even the single play game seems slower than I remember it. I'm running XP with a dual core Pentium 3100 and a 256Mb card which is plenty. My old Win98 setup with a lesser pc was crisper than what I'm experiencing now. What gives?

I get the exact same thing...It pisses me off when both me an an opponent grab a weapon at the same time, he can fire it instantly, while I have my regular 2-3 second wait.

Happens to me too. Everything is rather sluggish, especially switching weapons and firing. However I did just upgrade to a intel core 2 extreme quad system (qx6850) running at 3.4ghz and 2 8800 gtx 756mb cards... So I guess that makes things slower?  :humm:

OMG, I've got the same problem! I also have the "sticking to walls" problem, more so on ladders. I thought it was just me. I could not figure out why my weapon switch appears so much slower than others. It's to the point I'm scared to switch in tdm because it's during that time, I get killed. The only fast weapon switch is my grenade alias, which immediately resorts to last weapon, where many folk have commented that that weapon switch appears too fast.

Yes but my point was here when I'm solo on my computer (not connected to a server) I ping as high as 40. This is impossible. A LAN should be around 10 or lower. That's why I attached the demo. Something else is interfering with smooth functioning of the game. That's why I was just using Eraser bot to trouble-shoot my weapon change and also my mouse settings. I've also noticed my rocket jump screws up now and it used to be flawless. I figured XP is not as friendly to Quake 2 as Win95/98 - the OS that was around when Quake was developed, so that's cool. Its an old game. And the "sticking" thing I know is from using a high cl_maxfps (for me around 120). But I'm puzzled by the ping thing.

I've heard that people can get shitty FPS and odd sluggish effects like these from running q2 on a dual core system, but I don't know what causes it..

This happened to me.  After my mobo fried I upgraded to a quad-core CPU, but kept the same video card as before (geforce 7800).

Q2 ran horribly, sometimes it was smooth for a bit, but inexplicably it would bog down with lag.  (Even playing on localhost, but it was worse connected to a remote server.)

I found a setting in the nvidia control panel that fixed it.  It was the "Threaded optimization" setting, which it describes as:

"Allows applications to take advantage of multiple CPUs. Most newer applications should benefit from the Auto-select or On settings. This setting should be turned off for most older applications."

I turned it Off and Q2 runs fine now.  (One nice thing is their control panel lets you override settings for particular program .exe files.  So I just turned it off for r1q2.exe and quake2.exe, and left it "Auto" for the rest of the system.)

Regards,

quadz

Q2 with a pentium 4 hyperthreading works okay over here.

But you can also disable 1 cpu from a dual core cpu with the following method if you dont have the video driver option that quadz described :

- Start your q2 executable
- Minimize your q2 client to your taskbar with alt + tab
- Open Windows taskmanager with ctrl + alt + del
- In windows taskmanager right click on your q2 executable process and choose the affinity option
- Disable cpu 1 (or leave only cpu 0 enabled if you have more cpu's in your system)

The only problem with this method is that you have to disable the other cpu's everytime you start your q2 executable again.

But hey, it works
