i think that may be why some people (not me) still play oder games: they can still be a "top player" and used "advantages" that are now considered cheats.

if Q2 had a "pure server" option modded in it then it could be eliminated, but then how many people would not use that client? (rhetorical question)

Weapon stay was so popular because it prevents weapon camping and all out map domination without exception. It may not have that same affect in todays world but back when camping was actually an effective strategy it was important.

If timers are considered cheats, so can glow paks and other sound paks, such as louder footsteps etc.

They are all placed in the game to give an advantage to the player using them. Where do you draw the line?


For the record, I don't use any of the above or timers. I do use R1q2, and yet a few people out there consider that a hack also.

where do I draw the line?  if it wasn't included & everyone else doesn't have it, that's where.  IE louder footsteps, bright skins, etc. 

I don't consider it cheating, technically (because it is allowed by the game) but it's very unfair.  Might as well as use hacked vid drivers then.   Or a bot, what's the difference really?  They all give you an advantage that you normally don't have.

Since I've been playing Sauer Braten which is basically Cube2 I wanted to point out that it has built in Quad and Megahealth timers. They are quite annoying. I've only seen quad timers work effectively, as I said before, in team play games like CTF. They give you so much more of an advantage in games like QPong and CTF than they do in normal deathmatch. And with teams you can keep constant control of a quad bey team_say'ing the message and keeping people at a consistant path with the quad.

In deathmatch about 1 in 100 maps actually have a quad, and timing the red armor isn't a big deal. To time the red armor you turn around twice and OMG a massive powerup that's infinitely useful spawns faster than a large health pack... Most servers disable the quad or just run the Edge on an infinite loop in a large concerted effort to give their players an artificial lobotomony.

As for disabling client commands, it's important to remember that all of the debug options from enabling full bright, to removing textures, to removing blending effects, and even certain built in stress tests for lag exists in software mode and can give you unfair advantages, providing you're desperate enough to play in software mode. Like I said before everything from bright skins, to louder sound packs give you so little of an advantage that it's just funny. Me personally, I replaced my client with a 80x32 resolution engine that displays everyone in ASCII art to speed up my FPS.

And yes.. you guys do sound just as silly.
