I need a new game.....

Don't get me wrong. I will always be loyal to Quake 2 but after 10 years of playing this thing I need something additional to play. Because the learning curve is so long, to get to a decent level of ability, I've shyed away from trying others. I tried Quake 3 but hated it - both visually and technically.
Since there are a lot of people here into different FPS games I thought I would ask their advice. Ideally I would want to try something that's similar to Q2 in movement and concept. Maybe even one that uses the same game engine, I don't know. It would also have to be both a Single Play game and Multiplayer game. It doesn't have to be that new - just have a decent number of servers to connect to.
Any suggestion would be helpful. Thanx....

i was going to say www.warsow.net but then i read you wanted it to have single player too.. if your pc can handle it you should really try quake4 out.

i've played AvP on LAN.  awesome (there's an AvP mod for Q2 too.  No maps but all three species with appropriate powers.  Yes, predators can cloak AND attack, just like the movies.  )

Awesome....thanks for all the suggestions. It's not absolutely necessary to have an SP game - just sometimes I'd rather not multi-play. I noticed nobody mentioned stuff like Half-Life or Counterstrike or stuff in that genre.....

I'd definitely recommend Half-Life for the single player.  I've never tried Counterstrike.

Enemy Territory Quake Wars is also fun.  (That, I've only played multiplayer, but apparently single player is available also.)

Incidentally, it turns out I have an extra copy of Half-Life 2 that I can legally give away.  You might want to read some reviews of HL2, look at the screenshots, and see if it seems like a game you'd want to play.  If so, I could press a button and my extra copy of the game would be legally transferred to you.

OMG yes, one word man, one word - F.E.A.R !!!
It has got to be one of the absolute best SP I have seen in a long time. The AI is very smart, checking noises that you make like bumping into paint buckets, being able to see your flashlight, etc . . . Hell they even will knock over tables and furniture for cover. They send lone solders to check your position while the others hang back and take cover. Throw a grenade and one sees it, he will alert the others and they'll run for cover.
And that creepy ass little dead girl, jeez. Story line is so dam solid it's crazy.
The weapons = KICKASS.
The penitrator: Nail your victoms to a wall with 6 inch spikes, watch them dangle by the arm, then go gun butt them. LOL.
The Particle weapon: closest thing to Q2's rail gun you'll find in any other game, only it literly fries the flesh off your oponant leving just a dam skeleton.
The Shotgun: Loud and does the job messy, nuf said.
The Repeating canan: You'll just have to see that to understand it.

Now for cool stuff.
SLOW MO, yes you can go into slow mo for a bit, take out enimeis before they have a chance to react.
Kung Fu, you know it, you use it. Stuff like bicycle kicks and slide kicks.

The Multiplayer has a huge following. Fat servers full of people.
Mods galore too, most customizable i've seen come out in a long time. There is even a Duke Nukem Mod with all the origianl DkNkm maps and catch phrases. Speeking of ear candy, the AI has nothing but cool shit to say, weather it's calling for backup, or crying on the radio that you took out the whole squad, their chattering is some great stuff.

And the multiplayer part of the game is free, you can download it to see if you want to spend the money on the single player.

Haha, okay fuck half-life, that sounds like the winner.

P.S. one thing I've consistently enjoyed from HL2 forward is the gravity gun.  I don't care what anybody says, but it's like General Zod vs. Superman (or something) ... you can frickin throw tree trunks and boulders and saw blades and flammable-and-nonflammable barrels, etc. at any given adversary... not to mention jolting deceased relics of automobiles from their positions and changing the terrain, etc.  (I confess I'd like to see a mymap option that replaces the BFG with a gravity gun...  )

To make a serious suggestion, FPS have 2 historical common factors that make them great, one more than the other. First and most focused on today is new engine features. However new engines in todays world go obsolete quicker than a cellphones. The real test of time has always been original weaponry. Think about all the big names and what made them that way.

Duke3d, Redneck Rampage, Serious sam, Blood, Postal 2, Heretic, Hexen, Turok 2, ad. nasium. It's always about the weapons. Heck Quake 2 invented the railgun (and in effect instagib) and name a single game now that doesn't rip it off. That's one of the biggest parts of Quake2's success was the new and improved weapons while still keeping the Doom2 nostalgia alive.

So as for great weapons games that I'd actually broke down and shell out money for is Painkiller and Postal 3, whenever it comes out.
