A fine choice.
A worthy adaptation of the book, only a slight few odd dialog changes (like the cop kiss, not in the book.) Very enjoyable movie.
If you like it, get the book. Lots of hilarious writing in the book that didn't make it into the movie.
(For ex...)
I was asleep when our plane hit the runway, but the jolt brought me instantly awake. I looked out the window and saw the Rocky Mountains. What the fuck was I doing
here
? I wondered. It made no sense at all. I decided to call my attorney as soon as possible. Have him wire me some money to buy a huge albino Doberman. Denver is a national clearinghouse for stolen Dobermans; they come from all parts of the country.
Since I was already here, I thought I might as well pick up a vicious dog. But first, something for my nerves. Immediately after the plane landed I rushed up the corridor to the airport drugstore and asked the clerk for a box of amyls.
She began to fidget and shake her head.

Hunter Stockton Thompson - a classic straight shooter who had conviction.
They don't make em anymore.....
"We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold. I remember saying something like "I feel a bit lightheaded; maybe you should drive...." And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about a hundred miles an hour with the top down to Las Vegas. And a voice was screaming: "Holy Jesus! What are these goddamn animals?"

Now I finally understand this cat macro.
Perhaps I should watch this movie.

Few of my favorite quotes...
GONZO: "Shit. I met her on the plane and I had all that acid. You know, those little blue barrels. I gave her a cap before I realized... she's a religious freak... Jesus, she's never even had a drink."
DUKE: "Dogs fucked the Pope, no fault of mine. Watch out!... Why money? My name is Brinks; I was born... Born?"
GONZO: "Get sheep over side... women and children to armored car... orders from Captain Zeep."
DUKE: "Let's get down to brass tacks. How much for the ape?"
DUKE: "There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. Some kind of high powered mutant never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die."
And there's about 1000 others...
Quotes I often hear when partying with friends...
"Hell, yes. You really need some sleep. You have to work.
Goddamn. What a bummer.
Try to rest. Don't let me keep you up.
"I hate to say this, but this place is getting to me.
I think I'm getting The Fear.
"
"Oh, Jesus! Did you see what god just did to us?!"
And of course... "You took too much man, too much, too much."

Books are always better,
I agree.
I watched LOTR then read the books, because I wanted to enjoy the movies.

there was a thread here, called "The last movie you saw" which would have been a great place to post all of this stuff, if only it hadn't died into randomness

I don't worship the devil. Jesus is Lord, friend. He died for your sins. He will forgive you if you just ask.
