I'm a mapper and coder. I'm not very good. Ask zena. I always entertained the idead that the only reason I win games is because I use a standard client.
I finally decided to install r1q2 and noticed that I'm probably right. Movement prediction is done on the client side before the move actually takes place. Quake2's movement prediction is kind of blocky and not smooth but it is very accurate. After installing r1q2 I noticed thatthe client side prediction has some sort of smoothing done to it. If this is at all similar to mouse smoothing then it's a comprimise of accuracy for the sake of a smooth feel.
Call me crazy but I can't see me using r1q2 very long because of this strange type of movement prediciton.

As far as I know you can configure r1q2 so the movement will feel like the standard client again.
cl_smoothsteps [0/1/2/3]
Smooth movement up steps/stairs. The prediction that smooths this doesn't work so well at low cl_maxfps values so you can turn it off. 0 = off, 1 = original Q2 style step smoothing, 2 = more aggressive step smoothing, 3 = try to detect 'steps' and only smooth them. If cl_async is set to 0, this cvar is ignored and the original Q2 style smoothing is used. Default 3.

That does not seem to be it, however I do like having that smooth steps on.
The prediction change is most noticable in a mod I have running on mys erver. You slide forward by pressing duck and forward. This gives you a boost of speed forward and upwards to make you move forward quickly. (most similar to the megaman x games)
When the slide happens the r1q2 client seems to smooth out the movement so that instead of being thrown forward, it's like your floating on a feather. It seems to keep up with the current position but it just doesn't feel right. I also noticed some difference while strafing side to side to dodge.
It's not as bad as I first imagined though. I tried it out and I only really attributed 1 kill to it out of 3 or 4 games. However I did notice that there is some sort of mouse smoothing set up as default as well. I turned it off for those games but combining the 2 would give someone without both changes a better advantage with reflexes.

There's a cl_predict client variable. cl_predict 3 seems to be very close to normal movement on the standard client.
Also mouse movement seems to be normal with the following
set m_fixaccel 0
set m_filter 0
set m_firectinput 0

Really it comes down to what you are used to.
I can't really play with standard, mouse movement is so diferent.
If I have to use the regular client for a bit, like at a friends, I have a heck of a time
getting back into the swing of r1q2 again.
