If you're using the latest R1GL, be sure to set gl_pic_scale 1 so pics are scaled to match the original pcx size.

the numbers showed up fine, but my crosshair went all tiny

Find the .pcx file matching your crosshair (eg ch1.pcx) and resize it in an editor, then the PNG will be scaled to the new size.
