Higher ping
« on: September 12, 2007, 05:42:26 PM »
My ping has increased by like 15 to all servers lately.  I dont know what it is, I havent done anything.  I cant call my isp because if I do all i will get is the national helpdesk and they could care less about my 15ms ping increase.   Anyone know a fix?

I don't know about a fix, but I'd recommend doing a pathping or two, to gather some statistics about your route.

For ex: (from a cmd.exe window)

C:\> pathping tastyspleen.net

and

C:\> pathping east.tastyspleen.net

(You can copy the text it prints out, by clicking on the icon in the upper left corner of the DOS window, and choosing Edit...Mark... Then selecting the text by dragging with the left button, then click the right button to copy it.)

Regards,

you haven't installed a new router have you?
or done anything at all to the line that connects you to the isp?

If not, then it could be one of their routers slowing you down.
You might want to try running a traceroute to a couple servers in different areas, and check the results to see if they have a slow hop in common..

It will probably be within the first couple hops since you said it occurs on ALL servers. (unless you were exaggerating a bit)
and the only thing your connections to ALL servers will have in common is the first couple of hops to and through your ISP, as they generally branch out from there to different areas.

If you find one of their routers to be slowing you down by 15-20ms more than the rest of the short hops, then you can show them screenshots of your traceroute util and prove to them that their routers are fuckin up, and that they are providing you with shitty service.

If you have to, weed out the riffraff by going straight to a department manager instead of dealing with the tech support underlings. (the low men on the totem pole are generally useless, when it comes to helping you)

hi, thanks for the replies.  I cant traceroute anything.  I dont know why, but ever since my friend hooked up a new router so I could get my wii on the internet I havent been able to tracerout.  This was like 6 months ago.

Here is the pathping result

Tracing route to www.tastyspleen.net [67.19.248.74]
over a maximum of 30 hops:
  0  jared [192.168.1.3]
  1  192.168.1.1
  2     *        *        *
Computing statistics for 50 seconds...
            Source to Here   This Node/Link
Hop  RTT    Lost/Sent = Pct  Lost/Sent = Pct  Address
  0                                           jared [192.168.1.3]
                                0/ 100 =  0%   |
  1    0ms     0/ 100 =  0%     0/ 100 =  0%  192.168.1.1
                              100/ 100 =100%   |
  2  ---     100/ 100 =100%     0/ 100 =  0%  jared [0.0.0.0]

Trace complete.

yup that would be the router for the wii...
you should be making like 7-12 hops if you're somewhere in the US to a tastyspleen server in texas..

looks like the pathping couldn't make it out yer gateway.
which pretty much means that the router is fucking you.

if the latency changed right after you installed a router, or something on your end changed networking (possibly even your pc) related I imagine that's the cause.

I had the same problem, except my ping went from about 50 to about 400, I pinpointed the ip address of the router that was the problem, called my ISP and they said "We'll look into it". They didn't (naturally). About 3 months later, I guess the offending router was finally replaced and my ping is now better than ever. I can't fault my isp because the router didn't belong to them, it was a Level 3 router, but I was out of Q2 for a few months.

In a nutshell, I don't think there is a whole lot you can do, an increase of 15 does not indicate a hardware failure, but maybe increased load along the way. Luckily in my case the hardware was obviously replaced, but my lag was 350ms, your's is 15ms. It might take a while before they notice.

it's weird, small ISPs pay large ISPs to interconnect,, and have peering arrangements with other tier1 providers that are more equally beneficial, so they don't charge them to peer like the smaller ISPs.

sites like this, http://www.internetpulse.net/ , try and show problems between the tier 1 providers backbones.

My ping went from 41 on tourney4 to 35 overnight last night :) but back in April I had a ping of 25 to NYC for only like 2-3 weeks...then it fluctuated in the 30's for a while and then went back up to like 45...I think its just how the internet is and all the different routing we all pass through... it could be any router in between the route to you to any server...I'm in Ohio and I ping 20 to Chicago, most of my traffic goes through Chicago routers, so most of my NYC tracert's goto Chicago first then to NYC causing me to get a 40+ ping, right now the tracert to tourney4 is going through Pennsylvania right to NYC...if you have a dynamic ip try releasing your ip and renewing it a few times and see if your ping comes back down, that works for me sometimes...I doubt they would have taken you off fast path, but thats possible...do you have dsl or cable? post some tracert's.

I guess that's possible, but it seems strange if you payed for something and they made a mistake they wouldn't notice. some providers you pay for a faster connection, they implement quality of service, and they do this on the source IP address (source based routing, and quality of service on the path).

a traceroute would definitly be good, i was mentioning earlier that sometimes the times are higher in the traceroute than they are to the destination, which usually shows even more during a problem.  like below, hop 13 always showed me 36 ms, but many hops past 13 to google was always 22ms.
