Damn it.

Yes, I had a backup...

But my XP system bluescreened today, and in the process of crashing, windows managed to destroy its
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\system file.

I eventually gave in and am currently restoring my system drive from the last Ghost partition backup.

iv never blue screened ever in xp, only had it restart itself due to hardware failure
it must take some real fucking up to make it do it

I've seen it too many times to count, although VERY rarely on my own machine.


Now here's something I've been wondering about:

Does it seem to anyone else, that when XP finally does bluescreen, 90% of the time it's nearly unrecoverable?

I have fond memories of the days of yore, when running win98 and I'd see a bluescreen every other day...
But then I'd only be forced to reinstall the whole OS every couple months.

What happened to THAT feature?

Well depends which BSOD we're talking about here.

The first one is the rough one. The one I run into when the system is most likely going to be unrecoverable. Most of the time this one happens the second Windows begins to load.

The second one is kind of minor. Nothing a reboot can't fix most of the time and normally has to do with some application fucking Windows up.

Now here's something I've been wondering about:

Exactly... It's not the actual bluescreen that pissed me off (I think my CPU may have overheated... I waited too long between cleaning and the fins of the heat sink were caked over with a layer of dust...so the CPU fan wasn't really accomplishing much.)

The part that sucked is what came AFTER the bluescreen... The non-bootable system.

Quadz, WindowsXP "but not 2000" has a very valitile registry.
WinXP reads and writes to it all the time. The blue screen probably came as the OS was writing to it.
I've restored so many registries it's unreal.

You may have already done this with no success because even the originals can on a rare occation become corrupted aswell, but i'll give the procedures on this anyway just in case it could help someone else. It works 98% of the time.

Make all folders are unhidden
1. Boot to recovery console and get to windows\repair folder. There you will find all the original registry files.
2. Copy all 5 of them to windows\system32\config one by one till all five are copied. DEFAULT, SYSTEM, SAM, SOFTWARE, and SECURITY.
3. Reboot now into safe mode under Admin and make sure the folders are again not hidden.
4. Open cmd box and type: cacls C:\System Volume Information /E/G Administrator:F This allows you to get into the folder.
5. You may are maynot have to roboot, but you should be able to get into System Volume Information and the older restore folder (when you copy all original reg files it makes a new restore folder). Once in the "older" restore folder you can pick out a RP folder by date, these are your restore points.
6. Copy the RP folder you have picked out over to your "new" restore folder. You now have a current restore point.
7. Reboot system, go into system restore and restore back to that date. It will restore all your Reg files from that date and all settings you had. Best of all, no lost data.

As I see it, Linux and related projects lack a lot of consistency and dedication from developers.  One browse through freshmeat, and you'll see tons of mediocre unfinished, unupdated projects for an OS that tries to keep compatibility with a dead OS.  It's like one big hackjob by a bunch of people who don't agree on key things.  That's why you have a million distributions, a million editors, a million shells, etc.  The same work just gets repeated over and over, it's sickening.
