It ain't quite as easy as "regular" fishing. Where I live, there aren't very many good places to go fly fishing anyways, except over at the Buford Dam that releases water from Lake Lanier into the Chattahoochee. It's patrolled by the Georgia DNR officers 24/7 (the DNR's hatchery is just up the road from it), usually there's a guy stationed there checking everyones fishing licence w/ trout stamp and keeping track of everyones catch for the day. Way too crowded out there for me. Fly fishing is just too hard, I'd probably end up flinging my line into a fucking tree every 5 seconds. That's why I hate using baitcasting reels too, they're too much of a pain in the ass. I always get a damn tangled up mess of line in the reel that takes an hour to unravel. Sometimes I manage to do the same thing with open-face spincast reels too. I prefer to use my old tried and true Zebco 33, a lot less headaches involved with it and pretty versatile. Spinner baits, buzz baits, bobber fishing with live bait... it doesn't matter, it always works good.

...unless I cast the shit into a tree or the cattails.

baitcasting reels are the only way to go in my opinion.. you just have to know how to use them.  I personally do not like spinning reels, as the design promotes twist in the line.  If the pulley on the arm is fully greased this can greatly reduce twist, but one good day on the salt water and that thing will not spin freely enough.  I really like how baitcasting reels do not twist the line, have a stronger and more reliable crank mechanism, usually a much better drag system, and allow for better casting distance (this is often argued against, but once you get the feel of both you'll see there is no comparison).  Once the spool starts spinning,  of course you have to keep your thumb on to prevent backlashes like you described, but just barely.  The spool can actually help by feeding out the line (continuously providing some slack), as opposed to the weight of the lure/rig pulling it from a coiled pile.  Not to mention, on some spinning reels, if you get low on line your casting distance can get ruined by constant friction between the line and the top of the spool (as the pile gets smaller, friction increases).

yeah i guess i can't help it to an extent, i grew up in a place where fly-fishing is relatively unpopular, and the equipment is expensive (i don't buy cheap rods or reels).  i'm definitely up for trying it though, and i don't think it would take me long to get a decent casting technique down

That's another thing I meant to mention about it. It's FUCKING EXPENSIVE AS SHIIIIIIIT!

Speaking of expensive, that's why I don't shop at Bass Pro Shops for anything anymore. You'll pay more for something there than you would for the same item at most other stores. The only thing I've ever bought there recently was some fishing line and that's it. That was only because they had it and Wal-Mart didn't. Sometimes I like to use the Stren brand flourescent yellow 12 lb line, and every WallyWorld I go to never has it.
