Graphics problem

I use r1q2, and the graphics suck, which is probably because it's in "software" mode. The problem is that I am unable to use any other vide mode (i.e. r1gl, opengl). I've tried messing with the config file, I've tried switching via the graphics menu, and I've also tried typing set vid_ref _____ in the console. None of them work, it just goes back to software.

Any ideas?

with my old 8mb ati rage pro, i couldnt use gl mode in q2 unless i set my desktop settings to high color + quake III was shitty with the card in xp (unless i had the xp drivers for it) however it worked better for shitty ass 98/me.

Hm, I've experienced complete lockups when running r1q2 on my radeon card with new drivers, but I have not had the problem you described.
-Make sure you dont have any fantom opengl32.dll files in the Q2 directory,
sometimes people had them for voodoo cards etc...
-Also, are you using an ati radeon card?

No, I'm using an ATI Mobility 128 on a Dell Inspiron 8000 (don't laugh)

Hmm... Good idea from Pan about checking for extraneous OpenGL drivers...

n0ctuary, do you get any kind of error message in the q2 console when it fails to switch to OpenGL mode?

By extraneous opengl drivers do you mean third party ones such as r1gl and  NoCheat opengl? because I've got a few of those hanging around.

Here's the error that shows up in the console:

Glimp_initgl() Error: no hardware accellerated pixelformats matching your current settings (try editing gl_colorbits/gl_alphabits/gl_depthbits/gl_stencilbits)
