People needs to toughen up and not be so offended by everything.
So should we go around calling black people the N-word?

I think there are paradoxes in how we grapple with these sorts of problems.

Where do we want to be in 50-100 years?

I would hope ideally a societal culture where people increasingly "will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character" — and where what today are regarded as odious racial slurs will have lost much of their perceived power to harm; but are instead regarded as an anachronism: appearing sometimes in playful banter, but not taken seriously.

How do we get from here to there?

The paradox enters with the present-day inclination to grant and bestow maximum power to these words; to react (usually on someone else's behalf) as if the world has ended at their utterance, and to presume that grievous harm must have been done.

Such a reaction is presumed to be virtuous; but I submit it leads in the opposite direction we should want to move over time, which is to see the power of these words diminish.

On a related note, I'm reminded of an interview with a black writer who recently had a run-in with the HR department:
Quote
It hadn’t occurred to novelist and screenwriter Walter Mosley that what happened in the writers’ room could find its way into a human resources department memo. But when a polite human resources representative called him on the phone to ask why he’d said the “N-word” during a story meeting, he responded, “I am the N-word in the writers’ room.”

Later, he wrote about his experience in an op-ed for the New York Times.

At that moment, Mosley realized he was done working in that room — the sense of trust between writers was shattered. He quit the job that same day.

“How can I exercise these freedoms when my place of employment tells me that my job is on the line if I say a word that makes somebody, an unknown person, uncomfortable?” Mosley wrote.

Mosley said true and complete freedom of expression is a key feature of American culture. That means that we might be made uncomfortable from time to time, but Mosley argues that those should be moments of discussion and debate, not an occasion to email human resources.

I agree with what Quads said.

I was not promoting the use of words that many consider hateful.  My thing is, why is it made into such a big deal when it happens.
Many people use these words to get a reaction.  If people did not get a reaction, it would mostly go away.
