Camping or controlling a map

I agree with some of jager's points....

It's as if I never even said anything. Like you read the heading and just responded based on previous threads not even involving me.


I don't care that someone was camping. My problem is that he lied about it, which is the point of the post. How many people seriously explain it away?

The other problem is to point out that it's not mangy mutt's fault that Marics made a camper map. I actually said that first thing when entering the level. Camping is not an effective strategy in real life. On the 3 I mentioned it actually is. My point is that in my opinion that makes it a poorly designed level. Similar to placing a bfg on every spawn in one giant full bright room. Fun in a massive FFA, however it's a rookie move.

And dirvish, you hint at but don't make the distinction between skill and strategy. Yes it's strategic to rocket everyone before they can pick up a weapon. But the regular shotgun with no armor that kills your rocket with 200 armor...has more skill. That's the distinction. So yes someone with skill can break a camp, however that doesn't defend his actions. And that doesn't defend the map. That pedestrian didn't run fast enough. It's his fault!

1st:

I can't bring myself to place blame on a mapper for people using a map in a manner that is inconsistent with that mappers wishes.

If he made it for a slower paced 4-6 player game and it is used for a duel or for an 18 player spamfest, then the map layout is no longer at fault for the exploitation of it's features.

I see it like this:

If a hooker has 3 holes you can put your pecker in, is it god's fault when 10 guys try to bang her simultaneously and can't find enough places to stick all their dongs?



2nd:

Every single map ever has a place in it that can be used to someone's advantage.
It is a very basic but effective strategy to find an advantageous position from which to fire.
(either one that is defensively fortified or one that offers an unparalleled field of fire)

Just as a sniper will tend to find higher ground in an attempt to maximize his killing potential, a player who is being shot at from all sides in an FFA game is making an intelligent strategic decision to put himself in an easily defended location that minimizes the angles from which he can be killed.


3rd:

An equally intelligent FFA player as the aforementioned "camper" should be able to realize that if a spot has great defensive advantages, they should either deprive their enemy of using it by spamming it with rox/nades, or they should take that position and hold it. This is also a very simple element of stategic combat that applies not only in-game, but in real life military operations.


4th:

I doubt mangy "lied" about camping. He just has a very different opinion of what constitutes setting up camp.
He may have repeatedly killed you from a nice vantage point that was stocked with ammo, but there are more than 3 ways to get up to that high spot on "rooftop serenade" and chaingunning him while you get there, would probably make it pretty tough for him to snipe you.

If you dont want to die by railgun, pick up 1 armor shard. now you'll last twice as long.

5th:

If you have a shotgun and you're facing an opponent with the RL and the RA, you run.
don't tell me that trying to kill an opponent with the SG when you're monumentally outclassed "is skill".
it's stupidity. in that situation, I'd say the guy who managed to get both a highly powerful weapon and the best armor in the game was the more skillful player.

the only way to win that battle with an SG would be insane luck, not skill.

i didnt read any of this but i will say that camping, to me, only applies to ffa noob servers.  Like in tdm on edge, why not wait by lift with rl if you KNOW there's someone in lower rl, and when you kill them, as long as your teammate isnt in trouble, wait some more to see if he or his teammate will fall for it again! why the fuck not? usually habitual camping will lead to your team's downfall.. but in tdm people think about strategy much more than ppl on ffa servers.  Its the people that can predict what their opponents will do that will prevail... mindgames and fakeouts are used all the time in tons of different situations.

I know it doesnt make any differnce if i camp or run around like forest gump i usualy get 20 frag +/-. I experienced that its not the tactic that decides who wins. Its how relaxed you play and how nice. This way it looks almost like players enjoy dying of your shots.
There are good to none players that can piss me of with camping. I play quake for 30+/- years and i got used to campers. Some campers had such a great personality that it changed my view on camping as done on ffa servers forever and ever. and now stfu!
