It really depends what he's going to run and how much money he has.  I bought an ASUS Geforce 6200 128MB for $53 (AGP card because this system is without a PCI-E slot), and it runs quake 2 and counter-strike: source quite well, is stable, and text is sharp (I've had cheap cards which displayed blurry text).  I never have slow downs in quake 2 with this card.  I occasionally have my framerate in CSS drop to about 40 fps in areas with tons of people shooting in one area (like in fy_iceworld), but usually it's around 40-70fps.

The specs are not all the same  on 7900 GS's either.

The specs are so similar, you may as well call them the same. Red apples to reddish apples...

Oddly Newegg is pulling their 7900's off slowly... not sure why. A lot of the cards we posted that were 7900 are no longer on their site.

So basically here are my final suggestions... (Picking a video card can be a bitch)

The card dahang posted isn't a bad deal. Pretty quick and has a 256-bit memory interface.

But if you're going to pay $170 out right for a card, why not get one of the the new series cards? Their a tad faster and support DirectX 10. Only downside to the 8600 series is that they do not have a 256-bit memory interface, they are all 128-bit. What is strange is that none of the 8000 series are 256-bit. They go from 128-bit to 320-bit, not sure why that is.

My main choose for you is still a 7600GT... they are more then enough for Quake 2 and when I had mine it ran Q4 fine. They're quality, fast and cheap. It will get the job done.
