7600's are fine, but most of them have small noisy single speed fans. If you can score something like a 7900gs for a bit more, go for it. Not only do they offer variable speed fans, but they are also much faster in high res gaming due to having a 256bit memory bus.

xp works perefectly fine with 512mb. I administrate over 60 computers all running XP pro with 256mb - 512mb. Unless your running software that uses high amounts of memory, 512mb is just fine for the average user that will use office, surf or play a simple game like quake2. On the other hand 512mb of memory is pretty much a waste in a win2000 machine, 2000 doesn't handle memory as well as xp. slooooooooow....

I believe price is a factor for metal. low end 7900 cards are around and over $100. The 7900 series also had TERRIBLE reviews and endless problems. If he only plans to play q2 or doesn't mind balanced graphic settings on newer games, 7600 will be fine.

computer is supposed to come tomorrow. i'll pretty sure i'm going to go with the 7600gt. will any vid card that is pci-express be compatible with this motherboard?

I've installed xp on my pc before, runs like a bat outta hell, but very unstable because it doesn't really support modern motherboards etc.

You said XP, not Win98. When you say that XP doesn't work on today's motherboards I am going to assume you know nothing about computers.

If you took a few minutes to read parts of this thread of any other technical thread on this forum where I chimed in with my help or opinons then you would realize I have a good grasps of things with these topics. 7900s aren't bad, but if you're gonna spend the dough go all the way and get a brand spankin new one that'll run a game that doesn't come out till next year...

Once you've got a mobo with PCI-E slots, it's all money after that.

metal, assuming quake2 is the only game you will run, it works fine in opengl with just about any reasonably modern video card and cpu. I had a geforce 2 mx 32MB on a celeron 433 machine, and it worked fairly well, averaging I think around 60-100fps. My suggestion is to go with an athlon 64 x2 or a sempron (if you're really going cheap), and a motherboard that has a geforce 6100 built-in, such as the ECS, Foxconn, or ASUS boards (Example: Asus M2N-MX). I currently have an athlon 64 3000+ with a geforce 6200 AGP 8x card, and I can play counter-strike: source with an average of 40-70fps on normal settings, which is a much more hardware demanding game than quake2.

got the new computer in.. up and running.. now i just have to figure out how to run q2 in this 19" widescreen 1440x900 monitor. It says "Couldnt register window class" in a box that is labeled quake 2 fatal error. any ideas?

EDIT: ahh, i gotta get a sound card too..

metal, I can't say with certainty what the problem is. Does this happen without your own configuration file in the baseq2 directory? Have you set up your video drivers? Does it happen with r1q2? Have you tried re-installing quake 2? Is your copy of quake 2 OK to use (like no missing files)? Have you tried the quake 2 demo to see if that works? If it's a problem with your copy of quake 2, I can send you the original quake 2 CD image file if you like.
