dm4/ dm7 -fix?

Hi guys,

For a couple of years I have been making maps for Q2 (here's a link to some of my work) and although I've stopped making new custom maps there's still one thing I'd like to do.

I am seriously thinking about making some subtle changes to the maps dm4 and dm7. There have been many "remakes" of dm1 but I can't think of one dm4- and/or dm7- remake.
Personally I dislike cheap conversions of anything but I think the changes I have in mind can really help make these maps less annoying.
I'm certainly not planning on rebuilding the maps (well, after the bsp to map conversion I will have to start from scratch:), or changing the layouts, all I'd like to do is fix the horrible side trims on the walkways and perhaps some more minor fixes.


It could be fun to have tastyspleen-versions of dm4 and dm7. At least it can't hurt to try and it doesn't cost anything. However it would make more sense to "fix" the maps if more people would like to see it happen. Of course there are people who like these maps the way they are but like I said I don't plan on changing layouts, just some subtle things.

Should I give it a go and if so do you have some suggestions?

BTW, what's horrible about the "side trims" on the walkways?

... How 'bout adding some cool item in the hidden area in dm7 ?  :)

Hiya Pan,

these are great maps that you built, really nice to meet you. Kryptonite has a really good layout IMO. You're really skilled and I'm sure you'd wonders with some remakes.

@pantaloons: Well for starters those trims can stop you cold from jumping when you 'bunnyhop' in front of them and is the cause of many of the slime/lava dips. I already thought about adding an item (MH) in that hidden area but that will probably only cause more chaos in that particular area. But it's still an option.

omg its pan!! kryptonite is the best map ever! too bad you're not planning on making any other custom maps, but now that I know where to get your others, ill be checking your other maps out for sure.. BTW I LOVE Kryptonite!!  ;D

Yes, I always loved mapping. And how many times I started projects that never got finished is countless. So I pay a lot of respect to Mappers, cause I know what it is.

I never liked dm4 because of the BFG too near from battle areas, this generates a shedload of spamming. I would switch it with Quad (and then disable Quad of course  ;D ).

dm7 - I'd make it a bit bigger.

The single most annoying with dm7 on is that on some servers or some mods you get stuck on the right side of upper rl when doing the speedslope jump. Everytime I play dm7 with that bug I say this:

ya a yellow armor would be nice on dm7, and maybe change the rl in slime to something else and fix the disappearing never respawning bug it has.

If you want a place to place another important item, another idea is to somehow put a small ledge inside the tube that comes down from above the slime by the ssg arean. It doesn't really seem to serve any purpose as it is now. And maybe replace the 10 health pack by hyper with a 25 health one.

Slightly off topic of q2dm4/7:
I would like to see q2dm2 (tokay's towers) messed around with. Like making the quad tower an actual tower the size of the others and having it connect to the grenade launcher tower lower down(ie another way to get down there instead of the water or falling), and fixing that ladder below the Red Armor on the second level...just a thought.  :)
