Keyboard...wtf

Ok this is the deal    my other computer all of a sudden won't recognize my keyboards....ive plugged in 3 different keyboards, all from different ports and it just doesn't seem to pick em up...the keyboard lights up on start up, but thats about it...the computer is a Compaq Persario, no reboot disc's (old comp), and needs a PW to enter the system (which would be no problem if I could type) anyone have any ideas?

hmm thats an odd one..
Make sure there aren't any broken off connector pins stuck in the PS/2 port that the keyboard usually plugs into..
I've seen people accidentally yank the cord out of the back of their comp and break the little gold pins off that are in the connector.. this is bad, but not entirely unfixable..

I'd also check to see that the keyboard port/adapter is securely connected to the mobo (it should either plug in with a little flat cable, or be integrated with the mobo)

I assume that by all the different ports, you tried a USB keyboard as well..

If not, try that.


Otherwise I'm stumped, without poking and prodding it in person..

Hmm, might sound stupid... but... are you sure the keyboards work?  try them on the working pc.

Use a PS2 keyboard to get into Windows.

Open System Properties, Hardware tab, Device Manager.

Expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers and Delete them all. (Windows will reinstall them after reboot)

Expand Human Interface Devices and Delete anything that says USB. (Windows will reinstall them after reboot)

Reboot computer and enter Windows STILL using PS2 keyboard...

Windows will begin finding new devices and will reinstall USB items...

Once Windows completes this, shut down.

Unplug PS2 Keyboard and plug in USB keyboard.

Turn on Computer.

Now before the keyboard will work Windows will need to install a driver for it. This may take a few minutes.

If this still doesn't fix the problem test out the USB ports with other USB devices... if they don't work there is something hardware wrong with your PC. If they do work then you may have to clean Windows Registry of any past existing USB keyboards for a clean slate.

Or if you got it working by now, screw it. It works.

it sounds like it doesn't reconigize the keyboard before windows is loaded, maybe usb support is turned off in the bios

oh yeah, so plug in the ps2, and go in the bios, turn on usb support, if that doesn't work you got a hardware problem. 

because your saying your keyboards aren't even working before windows loads
