I had an idea to create a thread on putting together links to useful things for existing a new players, such as paks, demo archives, links for downloading clients, anticheat(s) - basically anything that would help new players in getting started with the wonderful game that is quake 2 (:

Here is what I have to contribute..

Pak downloads:

1) http://adam.tastyspleen.net/pakdir/ - I created a list of working pak file download links that were worth mentioning, there are more out there but none that I felt were good enough (either repeats of paks found here, or useless ones.) - so visit that link for a pretty big collection of links and information on the links.

General Purpose Quake II downloads:

1) http://filesource.quakeclans.org - Filesource, although not updated reguarly (afaik), there are a ton of useful things here, from paks to clients to tools.

2) http://gibbus.servequake.com/ - 8 GB FTP! All quake 2 related files, movies, demos, paks, bots (not cheats ;]) - all kinds of stuff.

3) http://jdolan.dyndns.org/trac/wiki/Retexture - q2 rextexture project!

Demo archives:

1) http://q2scene.net/ds/ - Where else other than q2scene.net's demo squad? Mainly european demo's I guess, lots of different genres and such, like tricks, tdm, insta, even a cheaters section

Clients:

1) Aprq2 -  http://apprime.0wns.org/q2/ Aprq2, great client with some features like celshading, enhanced shadows, png/tga/jpg support, even md3 models.

2) R1Q2 - "Enhanced server/client, focused on providing speed and stability rather than eye candy and gimmicks such as embedded mp3 players" - Although it is entirely opinion, probably one of the best for making it feel like standard 3.20 and security, many people report it as feeling the best too, reguarly updated too! http://r1ch.net

3) EGL - http://egl.quakedev.com - EGL, a client with a huge amount of eye candy, it's really good looking but reported to slow down older computers.

4) Quetoo - http://jdolan.dyndns.org/trac/wiki/Quetoo - Some naff linux client.. haha, just kidding, linux client maintained by Jay Dolan, huge performance increases and such.

Note: All the above clients are useable with the anticheat developed and maintained by R1CH. (See below)

Anticheat:

1) http://antiche.at - Currently the best anticheat out there, reguarly updated and far more advanced than previous anticheat attempts. compatible with EGL, R1Q2 and Aprq2. Though, only compatible with Windows 2000/XP.

2) NoCheat - Old and out dated, but it's still there, although I know of no link for it, NoCheat 2.40 in google should produce results.

3) q2advance - Again, old and outdated, and no link since q2players.org went down a while ago, but google should produce results.

http://tastyspleen.net/tourney/ - Tastyspleen has held 4 tournaments so far. (1v1, 2v2, 4v4)

This is what the Q2 Wiki will be.  Authors will be able to update the web page from the web page.. very easy and all hyperlinked.  The links you have on this thread would be good content on the wiki.

We also want to use it to plan the Q2 LAN.

Right now quadz offered to check out Ruby Wikis and host it on tastyspleen; because of his move, we have a bit of a wait on it.

RISE!   Might someone be able to explain hard and soft connections... you know in console when you connect to a server it will say.. connecting ... ... "soft" or connecting .. ... .. . hard...

 My connection is about perfect when it connects soft... but that is rare. Most of the time its hard.   I did not put much time into looking it up for what i got was about hard and soft wire connections...ty.

Can you add Yamagi Quake to the list?  It's what I am using on Mac OS X and it does work well:

That seems strange, I wonder why.

Hopefully he'll at least implement HTTP downloads. ('Last thing we need is another client that downloads maps at a snail's pace.)

I hear ya there.

Honestly, I wouldn't even bother adding this.  The devs are arrogant and the support is like pulling teeth.  Honestly, I'll be surprised if this one lasts given their attitude and lack of community.  Yamagi seems content to sit in a bubble doing this as a pet project.
