quake 2 crashing and monitor problem

hello,
i have three problems! i play q2 on a laptop and i can only play in 1024 resolution because otherwise it won't display a fullscreen. i don't know why this is. even if i put my desktop at 800x600 it will display the desktop less than the full width of the monitor.
i have to run software mode because i can't get good enough fps with open gl! it would be nice to get higher fps on this hardware, i just need 60
any quake client is very buggy for me, it crashes a lot. about a half hour ago i checked compatibility mode(98) for the client, and it seems to have fixed that problem.

Is your laptop's screen a widescreen display? If so you might try another resolution to fit it to the screen.
The laptop I use at work has an ATI Mobility Radeon X300, it can run Half Life 2 with no problems but gets terrible fps in Q2 (in a 300x400 window it is still unplayable). I have researched this and found out that these ATI cards are really bad for OpenGL applications (like Q2), but good in DirectX (most other games). If there was a DirectX renderer for Q2, this might solve the problem.

there IS a command, gl_ext_pointparamaters either 0 or 1 (I forget!!!) that super boosts fps in ATI cards im sure.

Tried that and got 125.1 fps on timedemo (demo1.dm2) in a 300x400 window with gl_ext_pointparameters at 0 and at 1. This is with all tweaks set for max fps. Still unplayable
. Well... maybe its a good thing I am unable to play q2 at work.

that's the thing, this is a work laptop. it has one gig of ram, and a p4 - yet it can't run opengl at more than 30fps in any resolution..
it's an intel onboard video card. it's a dell inspiron 1100, and it's not widescreen. you only get fullscreen q2/desktop at 1024 resolution : /

I just figured it out. Try disabling Triple Buffering in the ATI control panel for Opengl. I did this and timedemo gave me 648 fps

you can make it look ugly as shit and gain some fps..
gl_picmip "7"
gl_ext_pointparameters "1"
that should run smoother on ati cards.. regardless of what happened above with other guys, I KNOW this works, I just tried it on the family PC downstairs which has an ATi card in, and it boosted fps like god knows what.
