Random disconnects
« on: June 21, 2005, 11:34:43 PM »
Every so often I just get dropped from tastyspleen vanilla for no apparent reason.  There is no preceeding lag and the game just closes completely.  If I try to reconnect right away, I get a message saying "<my username> is already connected from <my ip>" and I have to wait a while before I can get back in.  Any idea what's going on?

Not sure if it matters, but I'm on dialup.

I don't know what would be causing your disconnects, but that message is probably because the server still thinks you are there, meaning the connection hasn't timed out yet. So I don't think its tastyspleen dropping your connection or else you wouldn't get that message, at least thats what I would think.  ???

Eyestrain is correct...  I'm sorry, I can't think of anything else to add.  It takes about 90 seconds for the server to allow your connection to time out, if you get disconnected unexpectedly (since the server still thinks you're connected.)

One possibility - What client are you using?  If you're not using R1Q2, it might be worth a shot, as it has the most advanced Quake2 net code going these days.  It may not help, but it might be worth trying.  R1Q2 also compresses its packet data, which should help performance on a dialup connection.

Hope this helps,

Ah, at last I have soething relevant to asc you Console! ^_^

I get disconnected by my router / phone line (we're working on fixing it)
but could you possibly make it so that the server will time you out quicker?
Like, after 20 or 30 seconds? It's very frustrating waiting 90 seconds, it seems
a lot longer when you are sitting there staring at

connecting to tastyspleen.net:27912...
User 'Yuna' already connected from something

over and over...

Oh, and there are some Q2 mods which, if you re-connect within 5 minutes of
being disconnected from the game, they will restore your stats to just like they
were when you got cut off (Assimilation, the mod is called)! Could it be possible
at all to make that or would you have to re-make the gamex86.dll or something
major?

Possibly.  I'm not sure I want to change the timeout.  However this "already connected" message is a new thing with r1q2 server; the original id coded didn't care about that.  The "already connected" message in the r1q2 source code is accompanied by a comment from r1ch:

//r1: !! fix nasty bug where non-disconnected clients (from dropped disconnect
  //packets) could be overwritten!

Looking at the surrounding code, I'm thinking the bug fix may be more severe than it needs to be.  It's looking like it could probably just bail out and try to find a new client slot for you.  The downside of that is it would expose the server to a DoS attack in the form of filling all the (free) client slots with bogus connections from a single IP.  Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm..............

I dunno man - I hope you get your router fixed.   :-\

The OSP tourney servers have that feature.  Sorry, though, I don't have time to code that for standard quake2.
