Hi i was using an ATI 128 before and my quake never looked better but it was a little slow so i felt i wanted to upgrade it so i did and i went out and bought a NVidia 5700 256 and my quake is black is there n e programs or ne thing that can clear this up without having to change the Vid_gamma settings considering i dont like look at cubes with a 0.2800 vid gamma
with ATI the settings gave me a 3D Option where as with Nvidia it only give me a Desktop and An Overlay option is there n e other way then to have my brightness so high that i cant see my icons on my desktop and my gamma set way up because i do no that Nvidia does have a better rep but the way its looking i think i might just go back to the ATI (i dont really wanna do that)

what is the problem?

your quake is black? or is it just dark lighting?

Dark lighting

cant see n e thing but the Lights ( when looking right at them ) and the opponents shot

what are the gl_mode and gl_modulate settings in your config set to?

well, I tried to help..

I had a reasonably similar problem with my work comp (ATI RAGE PRO 128) running q2.
The vid card does have opengl support, but it doesn't work with r1q2, egl, or any of the other alternative clients..
they all crash when they try to initialize the gl module..
only works with 3.20.. and it was really dark for some reason and the lighting was odd.

for a while, all of the entities had a very noticable red tinge to them and very little of the colored lighting showed up. I twiddled with some config settings, and *poof* it looks fine now. (except for some little artifacts around the hud graphix)

in the console (hit ~ in-game)

type gl_modulate
then hit [enter].

the game will tell you what gl_modulate is set to.
gl_modulate can be many numbers, but 1 is the default

if you want everything to be brighter, type

set gl_modulate 3
and hit [enter]

then type in

vid_restart
and hit [enter] again.

do the same for gl_mode.
set gl_mode 4

PS. If you set gl_modulate much higher than 3 you won't get shadows in the dark areas of many maps.

Did you properly uninstall your old ATI drivers before you installed the nvidia card?

I unInstalled like i was told to by going to remove software then with the ati came a option to remove everything ATI so i did

my gl_modulate is set to 1 n e thing other then that make only the hud change makes them brighter eg. Armor Shards turn white

set it to 22 or something and reset your video by entering the video settings and hitting esc.
