I would like to add that the game is much more competitive. Mostly HARD CORE players in this game now. To reply to Toxic, yeah, lots of spawn and off the pad fraggen. Cus its so competitive.

I did notice that most players on MUTANT will leave you alone on a pad.

In my Opinion Xatrix is a fun active server and has alot of interesting skill levels and people that play in the server help others as well but i kid u not i have been playing quake2 Xatrix since 2000 and the changes even that has gone through are herendous sometime watching i find it unberable to see

For instance there is a certian player name Tru Playah or watever he is oviously new and if i went through what he goes through when i started i wouldnt get back on a computer. . . i wont lie i do frag him when i see him but i wont if he doesnt shoot me (or at me) PEOPLE JUMP ALL OVER HIM >>>>>IT IS SAD<<<<<

and about the hole high and mighty ive been playing since day one and if u cant pick it up withing the first time u play ill make sure u never come back People think of what u are ssaying sometimes u guys were new once apon atime and yeah things were a little different then but remember the only kinds of games like this before quake2 was wolfinstien 3d u started from scratch. . . . some people jump into Quake and they're throwing there keyboards at the monitor 10 minutes later there not going to want to come back to play and beleave me that is one way to KILL a legendary game i want my grand children playing this game and the way things are looking whos playing now thats all that will (unless u have that experiance from another game) the imaturity that goes on withing these maps its almost like someone has a gun to someones head and is telling them to win without mercy.    My girlfriend just started to play and its bad cuz no names ***** or ***_**** gets in there and decides hey it will be funny to win by 25 frags it isnt and for n e one who thinks it is maybe you should go back to that wolfinstine 3d play that for a bit calm down and jump back in

I don't play Xatrix... but I'm sure it's just like any other Q2 mod.

Quake2 has a first player mode just like Wolf3d was. Any player who doesn't take a shot at the first player mode before jumping into multi player is just asking for it.

I can assure I don't use a BFG unless it's the only gun I pick up in DM... maybe xatrix is different but most 'PRO' players will get 10x more frags with the other weapons.

map name q2dm18 exists.  It needs at least six players on it.  In fact, it would be fun to have a dm1mod map q2dm18 on the dm server.  Or mutant at least.

Other good dm1 maps:
q2dm1nc - no camp, has some glass panels in it
q2dm1nh - no hide, has tons of open spaces.  A ratbot's wetdream.

Indeed I think that's a valid point.  Although I'd guess that's more of an overall manifestation of social change.    When online gaming started up, I think folks were generally more supportive and friendlier because we were all stumbling through it together, much of what I think QuakeDuke was talking about.  It was still a fairly new concept in '98.   Most of the multiplayer games prior had been more social; board games, TV console games like pong, and later lan parties for Doom (which were tricky to set up -- damned WAD file loader!).  More direct interaction and more socialization; you rarely did these things with people other than your friends.  You might frag it up in a 4 player Doom LAN party (Chainsaw fights!  Yes!) and things would get intense but everyone would chill with a beer afterward and talk about the evening's fun.  IMO that cooperativeness spilled over into the early days of Quake and Quake II.  However, since those LAN party days of Doom, there has been an explosion of online gaming.  And while I wouldn't want to say that people treat it like it is passe, many folks nowadays seem to be jaded or desensitized to the commeraderie.  Online gaming is so commonplace that it no longer seems remarkable, and the lack of personal interaction has made everything more faceless.  I'm not saying you had to be an old school player to appreciate that as much as I am that I think it's harder to maintain perspective when (in a sense, not literally) online gaming is all you ever known.

i'd agree with about everything LaMont said.

i'd also say, and this is just a personal observation, not supported by fact, only by my slice of perseptive of it, but when quake1 and quake2 came out, i felt the average gamers age playing was older, much older then it is today.  Walk onto a server in any modern game, and q2 looks like an old gentlemans club today.  And that is considering that today, i feel q2 has moved more towards the attitude in current games, where trash talk is the norm.  In the beginning, i felt that trash talk was much less on servers.  Or at least it came from fewer players.

To summarize, i guess i feel in the beginning, the chances were good that several of the players on a server knew each other in real life, respected each other more, and were often older in median age.
