Hey guys

I just installed quake 2 from my quake 4 bonus dvd cd which includes all its expansions. I was playing throught he game till i found an annoying bug. When the player jumps in water the game crashes does anyone know why this is. I have updated and everything and dont know what else to do.

Any help would be appreciated thx guys

Every time you go in the water?

I dunno, waterwarp effect maybe sizzling your vid card?
try a different client?
updateing drivers

happens in software and gl mode?
whats your rig?

Maybe a sound issue? The watersplash noise effect could be corrupt.

This has been recently happening to me, I suspect it's card overheating for some reason, because it happens elsewhere too, including out of quake, but it happens ALOT in the water, I have naff cooling (no fans) and if the room is particuarly hot (often is.. ) it happens more.. though, I recently got the new tweaked 91.87 drivers (6600GT here..) and it's not so bad now, infact, it has only happened once since I got them

coincidence maybe. btw I forgot to mention, mine doesent exactly crash, it locks up for a period (the video) and the sound starts stuttering as if a scratched disc in a cd player, then after about 5-10 seconds it resumes as normal.

Sounds like your CPU is being hammered for 100% of it's processing power, hence the whole system lockup/freeze. Can't you get some kind of a fan on your gfx card? I screwed an little old P2 CPU fan to one of my gfx cards once, helped a lot...as long as the screws go into the heatsink it's a cheap and safe solution to overheating.

I assume you are both in OpenGL mode and not software.

Oh i've got a nice cooler on my gfx card, and a beefy cpu cooler.. copper hs and fan on the gfx card. I just have NO case fans and have to leave the side off the pooter, still runs a little hot for my liking

I ordered 2 fans from ebuyer but lost 1 and broke 1 in frustration as they never sent the mounting screws that were supposed to come with it. It's lame

GFX: 6600GT PCI-E Extreme Edition
RAM: 1GB OCZ Performance Ram
PSU: 600W

nope im in software mode. And my rig is

CPU: Intel P4 3.0 Ghz ht enabled
MOBO: Abit AG8 Motherboard Pci-E
VIDEO: Radeon X300 Pci-E
RAM: 1GB RAM (Not sure if ddr or sddr)
PSU: 400w psu

thats all the main things atm.

The obvious thing to do first would be to test the game in GL mode then. Software mode is buggy and not good with transparent textures like water and glass. Does it only happen with transparent water or all sorts of liquids (opaque water, slime, lava)? And, do you see any error message in the console after the game crashes or does it just completely shut off?

The game comes up with a windows must close this application window and just closes ill check to see in gl mode but i dunno if it will work. I will also test if it happens in all waters

EDIT: Problem solved! I put it on openGL and now it decides to work. Thx for the help guys

But if you just use the standard GL settings it's quite crappy though. TFG, try playing with these commands and values from the console;

vid_gamma 0.6 (The video gamma setting. Default: 1, lower numbers are lighter)
gl_modulate 2.5 (The brightness of a texture while it is being affected by dynamic lights. Default: 1)
intensity 3 (The brightness of the OpenGL display. Default: 2)
cl_lights 0 (Toggle the display of dynamic lighting. Default: 1)

To see the changes take effect type vid_restart

(note: You will have to set the cl_lights command each time you start the game unless you write it in a seperate autoexec.cfg.)
