Finally tried this thing after reading about it for ages..."the brave new world" where one can make enough money to leave a terrible job like mine and sit and watch the cash roll in. Or so it is said:selling something in-game generates Real Cash of some trickling amount...I bought $5000 of their Linden Dollars for about $17.25. So I'm wondering how "a living" is managed to be earned in here.You can Build,and you can Sell what you make. What made me take the plunge was this video of a guy making a guitar in game:

I find it less impressive now knowing just how little detail you would see in game of the finished product. But its still facinating to see done. I tried my hand at building too,and managed a passable imitation of those dripping eye stalks you see in my Tastyspleen web pages. And there is a lot of cool things to be found in game,all user made.I'll conclude with some observations I've made so far,and if any of you care to admit to trying it,feel welcome to contribute.

1.The Wild West. This macrocosm of Humanity at play immediately struck me as the twenty-first century equivilent of 18th century America. People settling new homesteads(like me) beset by Real Estate Sharks trying to buy you out and control huge new segments of make believe.New subscribers(you can start out for free,but to own anything you need to pay monthly)get to buy a small 512 sq ft lot for 512 L-bucks.Mine was near the water,a big deal apparently,so I was soon hip deep in IMs offering 1-3000. I declined them all,set my IM to "away" and started fiddling about with my property.Considering the demand and the fact that a whole island can run you $1250 US DOLLARS I'm going to hold onto it for as long as possible.Being a land baron is one way of making cash here. But not for me.

as for the game, i think I'll stick to quake

But it looks pretty damned involved,
I thought morrowind was involved and that chewed up 5 months,
I should DEFFINATELY stay away from this one.

this looks like the most in-depth sims-style mmorpg I've ever seen. you could easily lose yourself
in a game-world like that if you weren't strong. I'd be making BFG's and Railguns for people to carry around,
all day and all night, until I starved at my desk.

I was wondering though... do you have to buy the materials for the things you build (with funny money)?
It seems that if you didn't have overhead, you could write a bot that cranks out items all day while you're at work
and you could sell them to make back your monthly fee in no time.

Neat. Have some friends who play.

1) Will be more interesting when the environment actually operates according to an approximation of physics, instead of simulating physics. Our minds are accustomed to this.

2) Breeding pets and genetic programming would fit SecondLife well.

3) Especially with all the the air travel problems, I can imagine an environment like this for collaboration. Most electronic collaboration is flat or even text only. Of course the handshake and the unspoken or overheard conversations can be crucial and hard to replace.

3) At some point one's virtual life might be the life that matters. The life that brings you your money, your relationships, your excitement, your exploration.

4) Back to Q2, having a map making engine in the game would be great. Imagine CTF where each team can build walls. Or you can make guns by specifying some amount of units for projectiles, velocity, damage, explosion, etc... Or for the jump server. Also, being able to blow away walls would be neat.

Everything built in game is done through conjuring simple basic shapes called primatives or Prims in-game and you manipulate them until you get the shape you want. You can import your own textures ,which cost a piddling amount of L bucks,or buy them in game. There are templates for designing clothes downloadable for free,and even basic scripts you connect to these items you build to make them do things. People DO make guns that shoot things for effect but no real harm comes to your avatar. Money concerns start with the purchase of large lots of land because you need land to build permenent things on like a shop or house. Get a big enough plot and then you have to pay monthly maintaince fees which vary on the size of the lot. A lot of buyable things have to do with animating one's avatar and clothing it. If you aren't into bondage wear and are content to get your porn out of game its a relatively cheap existance. And it IS free initially. Worth exploring.

The similarities to this and the "Metaverse" mentioned in the book are quite shocking.
