Quake..uh guitar book?

This probably belongs in the music section, but I was afraid my pool of available replies would be limited there. Anyway, I have a young aspiring guitar player who could benefit from a beginner's chord book. I (his Dad) play several instruments but do it mostly by ear. Any books with clear chord diagrams and basic fundamental exercises that he can do on his own is what I'm looking for. I'm sure somebody here has some ideas or suggestions. The www is so full of them I don't know where to start!
Thanks.

Yeah, id say the net would be the best free help out there.
I took lessons for a few months, but stopped.
just came up with my own stuff.. and worked on scales.
the standard g, c, and d chords is what helped everything click.
I quit playing though
but I gar-on-tee I can still fluently play those 3 chords

I've played for 35 years and am familiar with the fretboard and musical theory. Here's some stuff you may find useful. Just some advice - if you want them to retain interest, give them a few contemporary easy songs (or older - maybe Neil Young) to learn. Doing chrods and scales will only last so long. They'll be more inclined to keep at it if they can actually play a song, no matter how simple.

Make him listen to Rust In Peace by megadeth every day and teach him how to sweep pick. That's all you need to do.
