I kind of wish Bill Nye had been able to see those audience questions beforehand. There are so many slam dunks available when refuting young earth creationist claims, and Nye hit a few of them, but sometimes seemed to get bogged down in digressions that I felt probably weren't connecting with the audience.

Obviously Ken Ham only agreed to do this debate because Bill Nye was going to be his opponent. Bill Nye has a reputation for being a super nice guy, and anyone else like Richard Dawkins would've chosen to spend more time leveling ridicule and veiled insults at him. And personally, I would've been completely bored and uninterested in that. It turned out to be a lot more of a reasonable actual "discussion" about the subject rather than a disgruntled argument between two assholes with high opinions of themselves, which is usually what I expect from these kinds of debates.

Yes, I was happy with the tone of the debate.

One of my favorite moments was when Bill Nye skewered Ken Ham's artificial distinction between 'historical' and 'observational' science by pointing out how astronomy necessarily combines the two simultaneously: every present observation of the night sky is a vision of the historical past. But I especially liked how Nye continued on that topic and brought the concept of the age of photons right into the room, quipping how he observed the folks in the back of the room looked a little younger than those in the front. I thought he connected really well with the audience in that moment -- that sort of ideal point where you've got people laughing but also thinking.

I just recall wishing more points could have been brought home in that fashion. (Ideally. I get that it's not easy to do on stage under time pressure.)

The passage says you can pick up serpents, it doesn't say you won't get bit. It also doesn't mention "poisonous serpents". Personally, if they want to do that, it's fine with me, I only hope they achieve commune with God before they add to the gene pool.

The proposed new law's defenders argue that the current personal status law violates sharia religious law.

Thanks for identifying what this "church" became under his leadership...a cult.  You shall know them (false teachers) by their fruit.
