I cant pinpoint it.

If my computers running for awhile, I can just be doing anything and it will lock up completely, i'll have to wait like 10 to 15 seconds for it to "regain conciousness", first thoughts was overheating, as before it had no casefans, (supplier supplied no mounting screws), so I went and got some and i've got a 120mm and 80mm case fan in there, 120 sucking it in from front, 80 sucking out + side vent open. and it's done nothing to "Help" it. Then I thought I dunno maybe spyware / viruses? checked and im clean as a whistle, then I thought maybe hardware and ive checked and reseated ram and video card to make sure, so now im just stuck and cant think as to what it could be, any ideas?

AMD Athlon 3000+ - 1800mhz (no overclock). [stock heatsink/fan]
1 GB OCZ Performance ram
Gigabyte K8N-E nForce4 PCI-E Motherboard.
Winfast LeadTek 6600GT PCI-E 128mb factory-overclocked 575/1125mhz
600W PSU
30 GB IDE HDD
Windows XP Pro updated with Windizupdate.

it could still be overheating with fans, how much thermal paste did you put on yur cpu

download them program called everest, and it should tell you what temp your gpu,cpu and hard drive are going at

just as i thought, same problem i had a month or so ago
yur cpu should be around 35-40 on idle (only windows running, no programs)

As you said, checked BIOS and it reads as 35-37, easytune05 reads as 35-07 aswell, just everest says 70. and it doesent move from 70.

Oh one more thing possible I should mention, it did it about 2 hours ago and the screen went black, had to reboot to get picture. first time thats happened though. and I was banging the keyboard crazy cos it did the freeze up again

A few programs will report your current temperature wrongly, so don't trust anything except the direct BIOS readings. If you used the stock AMD heatsink, just make sure the thermal paste is making a good connection between the CPU and heatsink, and you shouldn't have a problem. Don't worry about the retention clip popping up, even if it is seating at an awkward angle. That lever is held in place by a little cam, so once you pass a certain point that last clip will lock itself in place (even if it doesn't sit neatly like it show in the motherboard manual).

BTW, my new machine reports the CPU and mobo temperatures backwards in some programs, namely Sandra. Oh yeah, and my PS fan is running at 11500rpms supposedly

Honestly though, I kinda doubt it's an actual hardware related issue, as you never complained about it before. You really need to take that Windows XP SP2 CD of yours and customize it yourself with nLite. Take out all the bullshit you know you'll never need, and just create yourself a minimalistic XP ISO and burn that junt. Not to mentioned you had Norton Antivirus on that machine at one point

Nortons gone, I'll say that the BIOS and EasyTune are correct for now, unless problems get worse, and my xp disc is probably borked, as you know how many problems ive had with that so far, doesent even recognise CD-KEYS

I'll reinstall soon, maybe it needs to recover from the 24 viruses it captured from just trying to get SP2 installed?

I see 3 things here.
First your Performance RAM should have HeatSinks on them. RAM can and will overheat very quickly.
Second make sure your Vid Card is Compatable with your Mobo. Check to make sure your Vids fan is not unplugged and is working. what kind of cooling system do you have for your mobo's chipset, are they on tight. The nForce chipset can generate some extreme heat.

Third and most likely. SLOW DOWN THAT VID'S CLOCK SPEED!!! It may be "factory" overclocked, but with all the other heat generators in your case, your GPU may just not be able to handle the heat load.
