No worries.  I've been programming for 24 years.  But I'm always open to discussing better/alternate solutions.  And I don't invest much ego in my particular approaches. 

If Wallfly drops, so will ssh (perhaps less often, but still..).

Wallfly drops for different reasons.  ssh connections stay up for months at a time for me with no problems.  And if ssh did drop, it's no problem... I plan to remember the last log line I parsed, and when I start up again, I can just have my tail command begin with a little backlog, e.g. "tail -n 5000 -f vanilla.log" and ignore lines I've already seen, and pick up again wherever I last left off.

You're introducing yet another open connection on each box, plus the cpu resources required to encrypt data that you really needn't encrypt, plus the overhead of a parsing script that has to select() or poll() ~20 streams.

From my experiences so far, I expect that overhead to be negligible.  I mean, hell, I already run tastyspleen.net backups using rsync over ssh pumping out 500k/sec of encrypted data. I'm not worried about data from several logfiles at a few hundred bytes/sec each.  (I do run the quake servers at nice -10 and everything else on the system at nice 19 though. )

Seems clear to me that adding a few lines of ODBC to Wallfly is half as hard and complex.

Wallfly is a rude, crude hack of the id 3.21 client.  (If I were to do it over again, I'd start with r1ch's tiny 'conesole' quake2->irc bot... or preferably implement the equivalent in ruby. But wallfly ain't broke, so...)

But anyway, I'm not looking to modify the wallfly client code at all.  And again, my preference is to use the direct server logs where possible, because wallfly will miss capturing some frags.  Sometimes other players enter the server before wallfly does; and sometimes wallfly gets kicked for stupid reasons by q2admin, etc.

I'm a database programmer by profession, just offering my $.02.

Excellent.  I need to check out the schema you came up with for tracking all this info.  I have some database experience but it's not my main thing.
