FPS issue: Dropping Framerates
« on: May 11, 2006, 09:43:52 PM »
My FPS drops from 120 to, i guess, 15-20 at certain times in the game.

I have been seeking to get a constant FPS with no drops.

I really don't know what to do to fix it.

Here's my config:

*seems to happen when a new entity is drawn by the client.....eg: every grenade tossed/lobbed drops the fps, someone comes into view, speed hopping into another area.

I have a modified explosion... Its smaller and helps with FPS drops on (much) older systems. Although, you should get a decent frame rate with that card.

you can get the explosion pak here (2nd from the last on the page): http://www.revilla.nildram.co.uk/tips-q2paks.htm

Change gl_swapinterval and gl_finish to 0 for starters.

Thanks....that stopped the sudden drops I was experiencing, but it has left the feel of the game a little different. When I pan left and right the effect is that of watching a LCD display built in the 90's try to handle a game like doom.

I'll do some digging on that........might have to try messing with m_filter and my mouse's polling rate.

Thanks for the help.

Sigma - are you talking about framerate while playing at Tastyspleen or just when you are running your own game? If its at TS, you will get significant delay and packet loss from where you are. In the past year or so my 'response' at the Texas server has steadily dropped due to sheer distance and the number of routers I have to go thru. You're even farther away. I've dropped my rate from 8000 to 5000 and will occasionally dropped my cl_maxfps down to 50 just to have a fighting chance. I'm sure its also general internet traffic which only gets busier.
Try running 'timerefresh' in game and see what it says. But I think you're just fighting distance. The weird thing with me is I'm supposedly pinging 65 but it plays like 150. The only time its good is the first 10 seconds or so when a new map starts. Then it deteriorates.

Well, everything is running just great now.....totally forgot about my rate vs cl_maxfps.

I think my drivers for my card aren't doing what they should be. AKA I notice all the ENTs flicker in and out at times, same with screen flashes(like the murkyness of underwater areas).

I don't know if that has something to do with the gl_finish command but meh....I'll live.

To make the water absolutely clear, put the command - set gl_polyblend 0 - in your autoexec or whatever. It makes a difference.

Yeah I'm aware of that variable, it helps gain a frame or two.

Everything is running smooth now.

Thanks for the help guys
