One suggestion for next Tasty 500
« on: April 22, 2006, 09:26:34 PM »
Like we did on the first edition, we need to have a vote on whether power-ups, power shield, invuln, etc., are enabled before we start.  Quad will win TS500 #2, and quad's presence on that map created a MUCH more campy atmosphere, and maybe I speak alone when I don't think that's a good thing for a marathon FFA match.

And if I recall, power shield was disabled for TS500#1, and quad, and other items who's usage will give a single player a big offensive boost were voted to be disabled.  The map was DM8, so Quad wasn't a factor anyway, but the no-quad thing was voted before the map was chosen.

I agree 100%  Quad just ruined it for everyone, it became whoever knows the map quad locations wins, and I bet Ely had a quad timer. Anyone who was blue was 90% Elysium.

We voted no powerups, i do not know why plastik didnt disable them. I'm not going to play in the next TS if powerups are enabled just ruins it for everyone.

It was clear Elysium was cycling the quads.  When I would get them, half the time I didn't find more than a person or two.  I found a much better frags per minute just railing out in the open.. unfortuantely that left Elysium more able to cycle.  GG, he played well.  I didn't think it was wrong or inappropriate at all.  I had fun.

First off, congrats to Ely on the win, he did what was necessary to win, and won.

For me, I hate being required to play a specific way in order to win.  In other words, spending all my time in the quad areas, of a HUGE map.  That's not "fun" to me, and I'd rather not participate, and had I known it was gonna be like that, I would have disconnected a LOT earlier.  I realized I wasn't enjoying it, and it was over before it started really (thanks to quad mostly IMO).  I think I had like 200 something when I left, was down like 70+ frags, I was in 3rd.

Quad damage and invulnerability are a part of that map and of the game.  Without them this tournament would've gone over three hours, easy.  Removing power-ups may be fine for every day play, but in an official tourney there's no point of playing watered down.

I don't mind either way.  Obviously id software put the -pu flag in for a reason.

Personally, I wouldn't play in a tourney where key features of the map are removed because a handful of people haven't learned to deal with it after all this time.

Ax, it has yet to be demonstrated that there exists, in the set of all possible tastyspleen tourneys, one in which you would actually play anyway.  ;)

As far as players knowing how to deal with quad, there's a difference between knowing how, and liking it.  Back in '98 I remember having an epiphany when I learned how to time the quad.  I even set up a small analog clock with a second hand next to my monitor.  (Not l33t enough to time it in my head.  8))

But shortly thereafter, I realized I just didn't like the type of gameplay where I had to always be focused on returning to a specific area of the map every 60 sec.

So I stopped using quad entirely for a long time.  (My current name is shortened from its original Never-quadz(tm).)

Anyway - these days I don't mind either way.  But I respect and recognize that people voting -pu may be doing so not because they don't know how to deal with quad, but because they don't like the particular focus it imposes on gameplay and a particular part of the map.

Regards,

Shotguns only gay if you have it omega...

I think in the HUGE maps the powerups were fine...
play a smaller map have that stuff offf,  dm8 was over in 90 minutes...
play a larger map with it off,  and he's right,  this would have taken 3+ hours

any advantage can be overcome

variety is needed

have ffa to 100 or 500 on server every week or night at same time     map  (with or without pu etc) is voted on that week or day

or have ffa over a voted on set of maps so weaknesses and strengths (or luck) can be evened out overall

congrats to Elysium (who would prob win battleblocks to 500) for being prepared and utilizing his skill and everything available to earn the win.

What about players vote multiple maps in?
10 maps to 100 fraglimit.
combined best frag-total of all 10 games wins.

I think some of the issues with the second TS500 was that the map and settings were not pre-determined(and communicated) far enough in advance.

off topic: is there a mod/port that allows more than 12 players' scores to be displayed on the +scorescreen?
