Email Clients? (Tired of Web Based Mail)

I'm giving up on my old hotmail account. Don't need it anymore.
Before I dive into the world of ISP provided email I'd like to ask what you guys would recommend. I'm using Firefox now and since I just got over using IE and getting a virus, I was looking at Thunderbird
http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/
.
Now I haven't really been able to find anything other than Outlook and Thunderbird.
Are there things I should worry about with TBird? Is it safe?

I do like how streamlined it is.
And well, I'm on the verge of disowning microsoft.
I'm just a short step away from trying out some of the other OS's.
*side Does anyone have a screen shot of how a linux, unix, Irix, solaris, FreeBSD looks like?

linux might be free
but theres still a price for using it.... you will be giving up alot
thing such as, hardware support, software support
and usability

seconded !
i'd much rather use another OS too, just to many things they won't do at this point
I run knoppix on a hard drive, which is really the same thing as Debian a linux OS.
I use that because it does things Microsoft won't do, or will do poorly, but there's a lot of things my windows box will do that it won't , which is mostly everything I do : ). I posted earier, I wanted to see where the MACs are at, but I don't think they are ready to do everything windows does yet either : /

Here's a question:
Will OS-X run on a PC?

i think you would have an even worse time with os-x
my point is, changing to another os isnt gunna be pretty
after trying both the new version of mac and linux. id much rather stay with windows
