Help-Error help

When player 'Makuta Bones' enters a game  I get disconnected and cant re-connect as long as he is playing.

The Error message I get is

 ERROR:Glupload8: players/Makuta/Makuta.pcx:  640 x 480 too large

I have turned off all player/skin/model downloading and have deleted the makuta model/skin/player from all q2 player files but none of this has worked.

Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like you're running the old 3.20 client that can't support it. Makuta was a recent addition I copied over to the server, I'll look into it. I just tested it and two clients dropped from the server because of that skin.

GL_Upload8 is a function in the Quake II v3.21 and r1q2 clients. The size of the buffer used to accept an image is defined as 512x256 (131072) bytes. The function accepts arguments of width and height and if the product of those arguments is greater than 32768 (131072/4) the client crashes with an error.

Q2pro clients rescale the image and do not suffer from this. I believe the absolute max texture size in q2pro is 4096x4096 but the computation is actually determined at runtime when it queries the OpenGL driver about its capabilities.

FWIW, trying out  /cl_noskins 1 or 2   might work after fully nuking the skin files.

For Quake 2 when i encounter a model i have problems with i just delete/displace the entire contents of the folder of that model but not the folder itself and then i'll copy the male model baseq2 files (sans ALL skins) into said model folder and then i'll copy in a skin that goes with the male model and rename it with the name of the skin that was being used with said model that was causing me a problem - i'll copy in and rename more skins if more skins are used with said model.

I go back into the server the problems occurred in and the malfunctioning and/or hard-to-see model-skin is replaced by a simple male model-skin. :)

Ill try the cl/noskins 1 bind but seems like switching to Q2 Pro will be the best permanent solution.

Type: Toggle
Default: 0

Description: Toggle the display of custom skins on other players.

Values:
0 - Enable the use of skins.
1 - Disable the use of skins.
2 - Enable the use of skins but do not download new skins from the server.


cl_noskins 1 = Just male grunts.

cl_noskins 2 = All the skins in your folders but no new ones downloaded.


Solution:

set cl_noskins "2"
Put that line of code in your autoexec.cfg so you can use every model-skin you want and never download new ones.

Naturally you'd have to delete or alter the Makuta stuff first.

I should have said the other method that really works for me, which I have used forever after nuking all custom skins. I never download or see a custom skin, but I do see male, female, and cyborg skins.

Even simpler version: Resize the Makuta skin! it'll wrap weirdly on the Makuta model but who cares if you don't get kicked?

p.s. You could also recolour a resized Makuta skin to offset the visual effects of the weird skin-on-model wrap.
