How would you go about using the renderer from 3.24 for zquake 3.26?

Just take the ref_gl.dll from 3.24 and copy it over into your Quake2 folder. Same for R1q2; put the r1gl.dll into your Quake2 folder and set vid_ref to r1gl in the console or your autoexec.cfg. -And it works with the 3.20 ref_gl.dll too of course, and 3.21 etc.

im confused about what command you are supposed to put in console or your config for 3.24 renderer or r1q2.

i just tried ref_r1gl.dll in my folder and it doesnt launch check pic below.

also does using r1gl or ref_gl in zquake 3.26 add modern resolution support like 1400x900 or 1920x1080 or w/e?

Yes, you will need the regular ref_gl.dll -either 3.20 or 3.24 will do- and the game will start automatically then you can type "vid_ref r1gl" in the console (w/o the "") and it will use the r1gl ref if you want to use JPEG or PNG textures etc. You may also create an autoexec.cfg with the line :

set vid_ref "r1gl"

- in order for the game to use that renderer at start-up.

I have always had a regular ref_gl in my Quake2 folder when running the game with or without R1GL so that may or may not be necessary. I am sure it is not if you have an autoexec with the above line in it and R1GL in your folder, but I could be wrong.

As for higher resolutions -I don't think so because they are part of the exec and I rarely play above 1024x768 so I have not tried. Zquake2 is super basic and just includes wicked fast downloading -it is original Quake 2 with http, so no gun over fov 90 and I am sure no fancy resolutions either, but you can always try.

**I would include a ref_soft in the Q2 folder as well.

Been having monitor/frame rate issues myself on my new machine. When changing video settings in R1Q2, it's actually using the command gl_mode to do it. Right now I'm on my old machine with an old-as-hell little tiny 17" square LCD monitor which runs at 1280x1024. I'm running R1Q2 with R1GL, and my Q2 in-game resolution is also 1280x1024 (gl_mode 11).

My new computer has a 27" LED monitor running at 1920x1080. I copied my entire 9gb Quake2 folder to a flash drive and copied it to my new machine. Config is the same. So I knew starting out that I would need to find a new in-game resolution. R1Q2 does NOT go to 1920x1080. The closest thing I could find to running at those dimensions was 1280x960 (gl_mode 8 ).

Although... there MIGHT be some way to custom define the dimensions. I seem to remember a thread where Quadz and Vae talked about it. I kinda doubt it was R1Q2 they were talking about, probably Q2pro client. Honestly, if you want better multiplayer performance, you're better off using a client like R1q2 or Q2pro. If you're more into the single player or coop thing, then there's no big problem using one of the fancier flashier clients with muzzle flash effects and stuff like you're talking about. But in a crowded multiplayer FFA server, all those little effects are gonna slow down your video rendering and put you at a disadvantage.

Currently, I don't use ANY resolution on that new machine, because I can't seem to get the damned game to run on the monitor at a nice smooth speed. It feels all choppy and shitty. Starting out, I was running from the HDMI port on the video card to the HDMI on the monitor, supposedly getting 75hz refresh. The rendering felt choppy in Q2, and it kinda looked like some screen tearing was going on as well. I suspected that the HDMI format was not actually refreshing at 75hz (aka 75fps) and was only running at 30fps (read something about it on some website). So then I tried running from the VGA port on the video card to the VGA on the monitor hoping it would run faster, but then it would only run 1920x1080 at 60hz, to get 75hz I'd have to run the monitor at 1280x1024 or lower. ::) So obviously some kinda hidden fps cap going on with VGA vs HDMI ain't the main problem. It's either this shitty video card (which I kinda doubt), or it's just something to do with this monitor.

Anybody got any ideas at all? I think the model of the monitor is an AOC 27B2, extremely similar to this model, if not exactly the same.

I did NOT pick this monitor. I'm merely borrowing it from my old man until I can afford to buy my own. Only other monitor I have is a big old VGA-only 15" CRT dinosaur that went with my old Win98 machine. Really don't wanna use that on a new Win10 Ryzen5 machine, that's kinda like trying to play GTA5 on a little green Gameboy screen. Monitor I'm thinking about buying in the next couple months:

Dunno much about modern gaming on PC's anymore. Is this is a good monitor? Bad monitor? Clearly all monitors are not created equal as I kinda previously thought. I figured some were better than others with higher refresh rates, but that any old 60-75hz monitor would still get the job done. Apparently not?

But back on topic... isn't zquake for Quake1?

But back on topic... isn't zquake for Quake1?

 There is a zquake for quake 1 and I used to use it but I'm pretty sure it stopped development about 20 years ago, then I went to Fuhquake which got hacked and was discontinued....good times. - but yeah, this guy called his 3.26 version Zquake2. Nobody seems to know about it but it works fine. Really no extras besides a security fix and the http, and some other little things. He used to have a LIthium server populated by bots and a neat little website with a listing of quake2 servers but it's gone away now.

lol im running a ryzen 2600+rx580 8gb and i was actually getting slowdown in q2pro in a few custom maps awhile back never experienced that except with aprq2 which runs horrible period  lol.

q2pro must not be that great lol.

I don't know his Quake2 handle, but I am sure his name is Michael Ole Olsen. That's what the "readme" file says. I talked to him over email some years back, seemed cool enough.

 What I do is I will have a folder with all the usual Quake 2 stuff in it but instead of the ref_gl.dll that comes with 3.20, I will simply copy and paste the ref_gl.dll from the 3.24 patch over the 3.20 ref_gl.dll. I will also copy the quake2.exe from Zquake2 over the original quake2.exe. Then I will start the game as normal and it will be using the ref_gl.dll from the 3.24 patch.

Now, you also have put ref_r1gl.dll in your Quake2 folder so you can simply type "vid_ref r1gl" (no quotes) in the console, press enter and it will switch automatically -want 3.24 gl back? Now type "vid_ref gl" in console, press enter. Voila!
