Definitely down for a contribution to keep the Spleen network alive. I know how much it has meant to me to be able to play again & am good kicking in on a fund to cover the costs. If such exists already point me to it, will be looking in for updates.

Hey all, Spl1nt3r here, (yeah yeah).

I did not know Quadz, but based on the comments here from people I have played Q2 with for many years, it's clear that he was a superb person and I feel the pain of his, and your loss. Sincere condolences to his family and friends.

I would like to offer support, financial, time or otherwise, to keep the servers up & running. Please let me know if there's anything I can do to contribute.

This community has been around a looong time, and although all relationships here are virtual for me (never met anyone IRL), I've been playing Q2 with many of you for what is approaching 2 decades. I would hate to see this small group dissipate and I hope I can help prevent that from happening.

I'll check in regularly to see what's happening. Again, condolences to the family and community.

Best,

/S

So sorry to hear of his passing.  It seems like there's not words enough.  He was truly an amazing person that will leave an enormous void in this community...  Condolences to his wife and family, if we're all this affected by his passing I can't imagine the pain those closest to him must be feeling, he was such a unique and remarkable person.

I used to spend massive amounts of time with Quadz and the quake community in the early years.  Life has since gotten more and more busy and the time I've given to quake has dwindled.  Any time I've logged back in over the years though Quadz has always been the first to drop a line and catch up as if no time has passed.  He's been a constant in my life since my teen years and I've always considered him a good friend.  I'm shaken by his passing, he was so full of life and didn't deserve to leave this soon.   I'll miss you Quadz! Even if you did always manage to hit me with a grenade before I could get to the railgun

Met him at QuakeCon a few times and I'll always be the better for it. I still remember when he visited my old LAN arena for the Pre-QuakeCon Tastyspleen LAN pary in 2007. Have a picture of him asleep on the sofa we had there.

I always wanted to go to one of those and meet some of you guys if only just to drink a few beers and tell a few jokes, but other things always happened and I couldn't get away. Looked like fun from the pictures.

I don't know how many of the pictures you still have from that QuakeCon, but Quadz has a bunch posted to his webspace that people might enjoy looking through.

Ahh shit! Even though I'm pretty sure quadz didn't like me and he had many reasons not to, I always respected him as major contributor to this community. He was much smarter than I like most people are but he had a knack for really putting me in my place when I needed to be. He had a way of making his point in a clever, logical & emotionless way which would just infuriate me. Today I strive to have such an attitude when it comes to confrontation and perhaps it's people like him that I've met throughout my life which have influenced me to think and act differently. Much respect for quadz, I shall celebrate him by reinstalling Q2 and having a stiff drink in his honor while I get owned in a game I realize now I was only mediocre at.

I had quit a job back in 2013 with 6 weeks of funds to hold me till I found a new job. At week number 7 he sends me a loan that keeps me afloat till my new job started. I never forgot that.

Like so many of you here now the servers, forums, and IRC was my home, I lived here. It was home. For some it still is home.
The reason I say this is because as I read through so many of these I keep seeing the same recurring theme. So many people who literally grew up from kids to adults on these servers all saying the same thing. How Quadz was there for so many and how he directly and/or even indirectly influenced them in their lives in many positive ways. So many that has grown up and moved on coming back "HOME" to pay their respects and to share their memories.
Even the older ones like me.

There has been something on my mind for days that I have to share.
Every time I read one of your stories the same song keeps forcing its way into my head. Not the EXACT song of course (change a few lyrics to reflect your time here). And even though I try to force the song out another one of your stories forces it back in. And I think I know why. It's the same reason some of us years later still pop in for a few rounds, the same reason I'd log onto IRC for a minute even though I knew most were gone and those that we're there likely didn't know me. Because at the end of the day it's true for so many of us, even if it was to the smallest degree.

Thank you Quadz, I have no doubts that we'll find a way to keep the lights on, roof repaired, and the walls and windows clean.
You truly built "The House that built us"

I played Quake 2 for about 22 years, and in that time I've seen players come and go, but every now and then a player passes away. No matter whether they were known or unknown, friend or foe, it's always sad news. Over the years as the Quake 2 population shrunk, the Quake 2 community feels more like a family, so it's always sad when we lose someone.

I never knew Quadz very well, but may he rest in peace.

Never really knew Quadz on a personal level but judging from the posts here and all that he has done for the Q2 community, it's no doubt he will be sorely missed.
My condolences to all of his friends and family, another Q2 player gone wayyyyyy too soon. Rest easy Quadz and THANK YOU.

If there's any opportunity to donate please keep us informed. Ever since ACME went down, a lot of us CTF guys have made TS our new home.

Sad news indeed.

If anyone has access to the existing infrastructure I am willing to help fund/administer it - the only thing more sad than quadz passing away would be if we lost this forum and the servers and community.

Count me in!

PeeWee PM'd me a couple days ago about Quadz.  I never met him (well, if I did at QuakeCon I don't specifically remember him) but Jehar told me about his Q2 community back in the mid 00's (I'm not even sure the first year I went to QuakeCon :) )

He set me up with, and helped me learn hot to, a way to compile Q2 code on his servers so I could have linux libraries for my Quake 2 server.   I've used this community as an example to others of how things could be run.  I've used this community to promote getting massive Q2 games going at a local LAN for several years.  I've bragged about WallSpy for years (although most gamers don't seem to understand the point)

If anyone knows how, please send condolences to his family for me.

Quadz' family and friends are indeed reading this thread and are buoyed by the condolences, well wishes, and appreciation for who Quadz was and what he was trying to do with Tastyspleen.

I'm one of Quadz' oldest friends and we had known and worked with each other for thirty-five years.  He and I met when I saw a for sale ad on a local BBS where he was selling an Amiga DOS handbook.  I contacted him and visited him at his house where I bought the manual and then sat down with him to talk all things Amiga.  We found that we shared a lot of common interests (computer programing, video games, guitars, music, etc.) and a long friendship blossomed.

Quadz was an incredible human being.  If you were worthy of his generosity, you would know it.  And you would be thankful for it.  He was generous with his time and knowledge and even was known to help a friend in need monetarily.

He was a gifted software engineer and I learned from him so many things about computers and software engineering.  He didn't much like school and at a young age of (I think) 16, he became an emancipated minor and got hired by a company in Edmonton, Canada where he worked on protocol testers (portable computers used to test telecommunications equipment) for somewhere around eight months whereupon he returned to the USA and started working at FTL Games on the Dungeon Master series of games.  Once I graduated from college, he recommended that they hire me to work there as well and so I did.  We worked together at several more companies, with either him getting me a job or me getting him a job.  It was great fun and very rewarding to work with him and we worked so well together.

Quadz was also an incredibly good musician, playing guitar, bass, and some drums.  He played in a couple of local San Diego bands and their music was pretty good.  I think he could have made a career of it.  Have a look at this video of him playing Yngwie Malmsteen's "Far Beyond the Sun":

http://cila-search.net/~quadz/music/guitar_practice/MVI_8806-090810-fbts-render.mp4

And here he is playing bass (his own composition):

http://cila-search.net/~quadz/music/bass_practice/MVI_4370-slap-riffs-071214-clip.mp4

Eighteen years ago, Quadz married a great woman and they were good for each other.  They lived a nice life together and were looking forward to an even longer life together.  His wife wanted to post here and tried to join the forum, but new account activation is approved only by Quadz and as such as things are she cannot post here.

We are saddened by the loss of Quadz, devastated, frankly.  And we want his legacy to live on.  We think he would have wanted it this way.  Unfortunately, Quadz did not leave us the keys to the castle so it may be difficult to get the billing for the server to be made in his wife's name and to get the domain name registry switched to her ownership but we will attempt to do so, likely next week.  What we need help with is the day-to-day running of the site.  Is there any among you that can help in this regard?  If so, PM me.

Rest in Peace, Quadz, my best friend.  I miss you so.

-Xav

This is really upsetting to hear. Quadz was always a nice guy and gave people like me countless chances even though we really didn't deserve it. I'm glad i was around and able to enjoy the community and servers over all these years. I haven't been active for many years, but I 've popped on the forums from time to time and it was always comforting to know the servers and community were still around thanks almost entirely to him.

Rest easy my friend. You left a lasting impact on a lot of people. You wont be forgotten.

To all the rest of you it's nice to see a lot of familiar names on this thread. Hope you're all doing well. Take care.   :ilysign:

I don't spend much time here but I have been watching this thread since learning of the news. Was quite a hooligan as a kid here and a contributor to quite a bit of discord. Quadz impartial attitude of my pleads to be unbanned especially when you develop that reputation of being a twat was something that always stuck with me. He was a flash of light in a darker time in my life I guess is what I wanted to share. I'm sorry for your loss and may he rest in peace.
