As y'all know I travel for work. My oldest son developed what appears to be tourettes out of nowhere.

You'll have to trust my diagnosis a bit. My 5 year old is already a stressed out boy. He has chronic nightmares. Tic disorders can be induced by anxiety. During covid he hasn't socialized with any of his friends almost. I'm his best friend, and it appears separation anxiety has pushed his condition to reach where it's at.

It's absolutely heart breaking for me to witness. We're considering CBD oil among other options.

More than anything though is that I feel guilty. I'm sure most of you know that the forum poster "metal" is my older brother. Him and I romped around and raised hell as kids, and our mom would literally ring a bell when it was supper time for us to come back. I feel like my kid ain't getting the same childhood I had in a nutshell. Damn it, times have changed....

That is sad news.  I hope that his condition is temporary, and will improve when he can spend more time with you and his friends.

FYI, not looking for sympathy. My son is VERY smart, far ahead of his piers. He's MY son, after all(despite what some of you think of me on here  ) If anyone has similar experiences or knowledge feel free to share.

Wow, I honestly had no clue. I honestly don't know much about most people here. It seems most people prefer to be fairly secretive. Seems a little odd to me considering we've all been around each other, virtually anyway, for probably close to 20 years, but I suppose people have their reasons.

I'm sorry to hear about your son. I don't know much about Tourette's, but I think it's something that can be managed to some degree. I suppose it also varies quite a bit in severity. Hopefully the times are exacerbating your son's issues and that things will improve organically once things finally get back to normal.

I had an older sister. We never got along. I played outside either by myself or with one of the two neighbors.

When it was time for dinner my mom would holler for me, and if I didn't come, she'd tell my dad, and he'd come out with his fuckin' two-finger eardrum piercing steam-whistle shit that you could hear from 10 miles away. And the number of times he had to walk out the front door and employ that whistle technique directly corresponded to the severity of ass kicking I got for not coming home immediately.

And speaking of neighbors... I was over at their house one day playing video games in the "playroom" they had over the garage. One of them was doing something that I was going to tell on them for, so I went roaming through the house looking for his mom. I went upstairs and walked into his parents bedroom to find him mom in her bra and panties and she started fuckin' SCREAMING at me, "GET OUT! GET OUT! GET OUT NOW!" And she was freaking out screaming so much that I didn't get to tell her whatever it was. 

Dunno what to say about the rest of it though. Won't say it's gonna get better, because maybe it won't. Maybe that's reality now. But if it doesn't get better, it'll still be "okay", because that's what any decent family does: they deal with it and survive joyfully. If anything, your kid is lucky that he has a dad who actually gives a shit about him. Not every kid does. Some kids have dads that aren't there not because of work, but because they're selfish irresponsible assholes. My club gave toys to a couple kids like that this year.

Took me a while to realize it, but family is ALL you have in this world. It's never perfect like you wish it always was, but if you genuinely give a shit about them, you'll do things, even brief rare momentary things like in my dysfunctional emotionally crippled Irish family, that will let them know you do give a shit, and it'll mean every bit as much as it would if it were the picture perfect version of your family you think of in your head.

This is getting way too touchy feely. Like I said, I'm Irish, we don't do "feelings".

Not sure if relevant, but this young woman who has severe Tourettes starts a stopwatch timer in this video and describes what it feels like to suppress her tics for as long as she can.

She can't suppress the motor tics, and one "fuck" slips out after about 2 minutes. But otherwise she manages to keep the verbal tics suppressed for about 16 minutes (or until about 11:20 in this edited video.)

She describes an uncomfortable nervous 'pressure' building up while she was actively suppressing, and indicates it requires considerable focus and attention to do so.

I've read everything. Sorry for the lack of direct replies. Yeah punk, metal is my older brother by 4 years. He's 37. We share similar views and we didn't want it to seem like we were ganging up on ya in the politics thread, if I were to guess. I honestly haven't ever talked about it with him. I'm confident that focalor and quadz both know that he's my brother though. Sorry you weren't in on that haha.
