Whatcha streaming?
« on: November 15, 2018, 03:52:10 PM »
Recently jumped on the bandwagon and signed up for one month of Netflix, but really it's 2 months, because you get the first month free. I got the 2 screens with HD package for 10.99.

Not sure if I'm gonna keep it. There's lots of things on there, but kinda like my Dish 500 package I have currently, it's lots of... uh... shit nobody wants to watch. If I get really bored, I'll start flip flip flipping and come to the "rural" channel where they play shit like Waltons re-runs and fucking cattle auctions. How god damn bored do you have to be to watch pre-recorded cattle auctions on the rural channel. Well... as bored as ME sometimes, apparently. :D So clearly I need something like Netflix in my life.

Some interesting things I've streamed on there lately...

The 10 part Ken Burns docuseries The West. It's pretty much a 16-or-so hour lesson in how completely and totally fucked the Native Americans were as more and more of the continent became the United States of America. Also kinda weird to look around at what America IS at this very moment and realize that ALL OF THIS was puked out onto the landscape in a very short span of 150+ years. Kinda depressing. But educational too. It explains lots of the main things one might see about Native Americans in American History textbooks, but it also leaves out a lot.

Another 10 part Ken Burns docuseries, The Civil War. An excellent series for anyone these days who "thinks" they have an educated opinion about the Civil War. Especially today, one of the most forgotten and misunderstood wars in our history, and yet still the most important one. These days people prefer to overgeneralize and equate the Confederacy with Nazism. Not even close. Not going to get into my deeper opinions on the matter because it would take too long. But in essence, too few of todays younger folks understand the motives of the common man who fought in the war.

Altered Carbon season 1 (10 episodes). Kinda good. Kinda weird at times. Very Bladerunner-ish. Not really as imaginative as it could've been.

Also... I was pretty excited to see this one on there...

Chill with Bob Ross. :yessign:

It's a collection of 20 or 30 something episodes from his 80's and 90's PBS tv show The Joy of Painting. I know a lot youngsters these days think Bob Ross is some kinda joke. But I was always into drawing and art kinda shit as a youngster back in the late 80s and early 90s, and I actually used to enjoy watching his painting shows,... and still do. It's just cool to see how he could take a palette with about 8 or 9 colors on it and make a vivid painting of a landscape in about 25 minutes.

I have been looking for shows that are multi-tasking friendly since I have a ton of crochet projects to complete. I'm going through Parks & Recreation withdrawal at the moment... I just finished rewatching it and no other show can really replace it. If you all hsve any suggestions let me know. I tried to watch Downton Abbey (on Amazon prime) which is also a rewatch. I haven't watched Buffy in awhile so I was considering watching that as well as Fantastic Beasts and where to find them on HBO in preparation for part 2.

Dunno if you've ever seen It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, but that show is pretty funny and completely nuts. The current season is kinda... meh. And the first season of the show didn't have Danny Devito, and it was okay. But all the seasons after the addition of Danny Devito are pretty insane. It's not necessarily one of those shows you HAVE to watch in order from the very beginning... but it helps because they often have running jokes and recurring themes.

Fawlty Towers is another show I watched on Netflix lately. Starring John Cleese from the old Monty Pythons Flying Circus show. About a guy who runs a hotel somewhere in rural Britain. Funny as hell, and sadly they only ever made a total of 12 episodes. Really funny show though.

Been watching Orange is the New Black on Netflix.

It has slightly funny moments, and some memorable and interesting enough characters, but mostly it's just bland filler and a healthy dose of UNreality when it comes to prison, which mostly just pisses me off. Seriously, how is this bullshit the top Netflix show?

Not really "streaming"... this is about a DVD I got... but fuck it.

Apparently at some point I mentioned that I used to like Ren and Stimpy as a kid. So a friend of mine gave me a Ren and Stimpy DVD antholgy thing, pretty much every episode of Ren and Stimpy ever. And yeah, I remember me and my buddies in middle school used to sing the Happy Happy Joy Joy song and shout POWDERED TOOOOOOOAST MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN in the hallways between classes. When I was in middle school, the two best cartoons on TV was Ren and Stimpy and Beavis and Butthead... and maybe the Simpsons a little.

I had heard they briefly brought the Ren and Stimpy show back on Spike TV or Adult Swim or something, but I never saw any of those episodes. Well they aired 3 episodes of that season, but it was cancelled and the remaining 3 finished episodes were never aired. It was supposed to be a more adult-ish TV-MA rated kinda thing, kinda like South Park or something. Anyway, those episodes are all on one separate DVD called "Adult Party Cartoon". And... I see why they cancelled the show. IT FUCKING SUCKED. It's awful. It's not funny at all. It's just stupid. Poorly written, poorly drawn at times, poorly thought out and awkward. It's just... BAD.

So if you were ever a fan of Ren and Stimpy as a youngster like I was... don't bother buying the Ren and Stimpy "Adult Party Cartoon" DVD. It's a waste of time and money. I'd rather watch flies fuck or paint dry.

I have been looking for shows that are multi-tasking friendly since I have a ton of crochet projects to complete.

Possibly Seinfeld's Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee ?

Also, my wife recently began watching (or listening to) select episodes of Joe Rogan's podcast on youtube while doing crafting, as Rogan has a wide variety of guests on (so you can probably find a few folks in the list that you'd find interesting) and the interviews are long form, lasting 2 to 3 hours.

A few examples:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGc4mg5pul4 - ep. 1159 - Neil deGrasse Tyson

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycPr5-27vSI - ep. 1169 - Elon Musk

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJ0-VeWMr-A - ep. 908 - Leah Remini (discussing growing up in / leaving Scientology)

Recently jumped on the bandwagon and signed up for one month of Netflix

If you haven't seen Black Mirror (twilight zone-esque, in the domain of not-too-distant-future technology-gone-awry dystopian nightmare scenarios) it's rather good. (Note: With perhaps one exception in Season 5 that has callbacks to earlier episodes, the rest of the episodes can be viewed in any order. For some reason the very first episode (S1E1: The National Anthem) seems to put a lot of people off, so maybe give a different episode a chance if that's the case.)

I enjoyed the first few seasons of House of Cards.

Also, Bill Burr's animated series F is for Family is fun.

Karl Pilkingon's The Moaning of Life is amusingly peculiar.  :dohdohdoh:

I watched his stand up special, Jerry Before Seinfeld, which is a mix of parts from a stand up show he did at a small club in New York City and docu-biography about his early days as a working standup comedian. Really good, one of the best standup specials I've seen lately, and I'm not even a Seinfeld fan.
