The Roman Empire
« on: June 25, 2018, 08:42:59 PM »
The Roman Empire at it's peak wasn't nearly as big.

A comment I made about the Roman Empire in relation to the Mongol Empire. Just how big WAS the Roman Empire though? Most of us probably know that at one time, the Roman empire encompassed pretty much every piece of land touching the Mediterranean and Black seas.

Saw this on my Firefox feed. An interesting read about the Roman Empire including maps. Second map shows the outline of the Roman Empire overlayed on a map of modern day United States of America.

Interesting.

"The Mediterranean was a big help in getting around — most coastal locations in the western Mediterranean could be reached in under a week, and even far-flung coastal cities like Alexandria and Jerusalem could be reached in two weeks. But traveling to the interior was more difficult. Reaching the most distant points in the empire, such as Britain, could take close to a month."

Imagine if someone had discovered the Telegraph back then. (I think the Romans probably had sufficient capability in metallurgy to build one. Perhaps allocating a few 'indefinitely indentured servants' to turn a crank to generate power when needed?)

I've always thought that the greatest tragedy mankind has suffered has been the backwards philosophies of religions. The Egyptians, Greeks and Romans were building AMAZING things with nothing but crude handmade tools and elbow grease (aka slavery, but nobodies perfect). Many of the technologies they had were the result of borrowing and/or augmenting the techniques of the cultures and people they conquered. And when you read everything on that page,... that's a LOT of bullshit that Rome went through during it's 400-some-odd-years lifespan. ALWAYS somebody hacking somebody else to pieces. Just absolute fuckin' insanity ALL THE TIME. In that regard, I suppose it was absolutely necessary to have religion to help keep people from burning everything to the ground once a week.

Remember that Passion of the Christ movie Mel Gibson made back in 2004ish? Remember the scenes with the Pharisees and huge crowds of jews arguing with the romans and shit? Kinda like how those crazy fuckin Iranians and Palestinians always march and throw shit TODAY - ain't shit changed really. But imagine not having riot shields or shotguns or rifles and rubber bullets  or tear gas to get those looney fuckers under control when shit starts getting out of hand. All the Romans had was machete sized swords, spears, little wooden shields, etc. And the angry crowds had the same shit. The only advantage they had was tactics and superior training. Ugh. Not a job I'd want.

Or imagine having a nice home out in the peaceful quiet countryside, and one night you and your family sit down to dinner only to be interupted by 40 or so psychos kicking down your front door, raping everyone, and then impaling you all asshole first on 20 foot long lances.

Kinda makes you feel like an asshole for always complaining about shitty things are in America these days. Compared to a short 2000 years ago, shit's actually pretty sweet.

I've been wondering the same. Last confirmed sighting was about 50 days ago. Tried sending him a message a couple weeks ago; no reply as yet.
