until you act on it, you aren't gay. you're just confused and possesed of a different sexual orientation than the average straight person. Plenty of people with homosexual tendencies, have gone on to have a family and a spouse of the opposite gender, by not doing what they are inclined to do.

Would you call these people, who have never had sex with someone of the same gender, gay?
I wouldn't, because they chose not to be gay and actually tried to be normal.

If you apply your way of defining it to any other act that isn't gay sex, you'll see what I mean.

I don't use GAY to describe people who have done nothing gay at all except for feel something they could not control, for the same reason it would be ridiculous to call a person a killer if they had never killed someone, but thought about it once, or felt like doing so. (with the exception of talking smack on people, for fun)

considering that "gay" has only become synonymous with homosexually active people, in the very recent past, I doubt any textbook definition of it matters anyway. It's only just recently made it above the status of "offensive slang" after years of meaning "happy".

Dahang / Jager - very good discussion, I thought Dahang's responses were very well thoughtout.

God - I have nothing but praise for your wisdom.

I personally do not like Homosexuality, I would not mind as much if it were kept behind closed doors.  I have also felt like telling straight couples to get a room sometimes, but gay affection does bother me alot more.

Here is an additional twist, What about when children are forced to be exposed to the homosexual lifestyle.
Adoption by Gay couples
Divorce - Child custody by a gay parent

I guess it could be seen as a child with gay feelings being brought up in a straight household.
