Hey all! I stumbled across this site on Reddit after the Joe Rogan thread

Of course I just re-installed Quake 2 and hit up some DM nostalgia last night. Back when I played in the late 90's, I was really active playing WoD 6.08 specifically. Do you guys have a 6.08 server? All I see is the WODX stuff.

Welcome back. Yes, I've met a few people who preferred the older versions of WOD, but unfortunately WODX is the only version that gets played these days. If you want a server for that version you might want to see if you can host one somewhere and bring some friends to play.

Is the WOD 6.08 source code out there? I haven't tried the binaries to see if they still run on today's systems. These days, I'd want the source code to be compiled on the current Linux systems with the current compilers and libs. Windows 7 and up will certainly barf on anything compiled with VC 6.0 from the Windows NT/2000/XP days so it would be essential to have it compiled with the latest tools on Windows. If anyone has the WOD 6.08 source, please share it somewhere so the legacy can be preserved.

LOX and WODX both inherit from the WOD pedigree but I think WODX has more new textures and weapons beyond what WOD had. LOX follows WOD a little closer and you might be able to tune LOX down to something close to what WOD was like. I can't remember what weapons/features are common to LOX:WOD anymore so you're on your own there. See http://www.clanwos.org for LOX info.

Looking through the downloads section on this website, I was able to find wod6.08.zip (http://tastyspleen.net/quake/downloads/mods/wod/) which has the pak0.pak, cfg's, and DLLs among other files. I was thinking of going through a game server host and providing them with the necessary files in this ZIP. Would that not work?

Those binaries are new enough it might work but Linux has changed a lot since 2006-2007. Windows has changed even more and Windows 10 dropped all support for legacy Visual C++ 6.0 compiled binaries.

Depending on the tools they used to build those binaries you may or may not have problems with them. They also may have some bugs or security holes we don't know about since we can't see the source. WOD 6.08 was probably the most stable version, I'm not sure about the ones that followed as I don't remember playing those WOD versions much, if at all. I think I remember 6.04 thru 6.08.

Grab and go try them or point your support guys to that collection and let them decide what they need.

Hi Ciph, I played WoD 6.08 under the name The Weenis. Definitely miss that mod and those people, was extremely fun and no other version of WoD compares. I met a guy in Quakelive the other day and he said he was the best player in WoD at duel and said he knew me but he wouldn't tell me who he was unfortunately, it was weird.

Yeah I have Steam. I haven't linked it with Q2 though as I still had the CD from the 90's so just did the install that way.

I was shocked to see Ciph's come up on the server page. Reconnected with some old clan mates on facebook a few weeks and reinstalled. You would know that "unnamed" would be playing in the first server ive joined for a game in 6+ years. Dude aint missed a beat. I'd hate to see him with a week or so playing time to shake off the rust. lol I lost most all of my saved configs and files somehow so i'm slowly getting things straightened out. Had a great time and i'll try to get some more folks playing. Thanks for putting the server back up.
