If I'm reading the quotes accurately from PUrri, seems like he said something to the effect of "I didn't even watch him play...", but rather chose to develop a style of his own.  I think that's misguided thinking right off the bat.  No matter one's skill level, if you are playing competitively like that, doesn't it behoove you to study your opponent's tactics?  His comments (Purri's) came across as a bit arrogant to me, and at his own peril, at that.  Of course, I don't know the exact context, but to rely soley on your own game plan without having at least some knowledge of your opponent's doesn't make sense.  One would think that he would want to exploit weaknesses and minimize opponent's strengths.  That, of course, can happen during the course of a match, but by that time, it could very well be too late.  Just my two cents.

Notwithstanding what I just said, I never study anyone's tactics, lol, which is why I'll never be more than a mid-range player in the grand Q2 universe.

i think it's pretty obvious Purri would beat Thresh very badly.  I think most of us would beat Thresh until he got up to date with q2.  Even after he got back into q2, he still wouldn't beat Purri.  Purri has had way to much time, and is on a higher level.
As was early said, the quote from Thresh implies you can't play fast, control more items, be more dominant, rack up a higher score, and not be in danger of dying.  so that's playing smart and fast.  no way your going to win, if someone is playing as smart as you, and faster

Yeah, purri would beat thresh, but if thresh were to practice for a few months he would own.. As for being able to beat purri after practice?? I think yeah, with enough of it... As for reaper saying that most of the people here could beat thresh - Do you think that he just dropped q2 all together and didn't play again?? I MEAN DO YOU HONESTLY think that the dude doesnt know how to circle/strafe around the mega and speed jump?? -- ROFL.. he would mop to floor with the majority of us with ease.

i think he would get beat by a good amount of players.  i can't watch that guys demos, i hate them there so boring.  and i've seen oldschool players demos that I enjoyed watching.  i think he would end up playing just like dz.doze, and would end up on the top of the heap, but end up getting beat by players like purri(which is a small handfull of players).  i know i can't beat thresh, but if he hasn't played in years, i'm think i could beat him for a bit, maybe that just because i think his demos are boring : ) , and by the time he walked around, i'd have all the weapons , and armor ;p

and the movement rocks in quake 2, he doesn't know what he's talking about, i haven't seen him doing any kewl jumps like purri, don't agree with his opinion there

I don't remember anyone donig fancy jumps when Thresh was playing...

Btw I played with Unholy who used to be really good at q2 in the very beginning. Then he stopped playing for like 2-3 years and came back. At first he had trouble with the speed of the game now. But it didn't take him too long to adapt and after like 2 weeks he was almost beating me. I'm not saying I'm that good or that guy was comparable to thresh. But if he could adapt that fast I'm sure thresh could do the same.

you're still not getting it exactly... Thresh would not move like he did in the demos that you're referring to reaper, you are all basing this off the assumption that he just all around quit q2 and didnt play around w/ v.3.20 of q2... I mean, if you truly think that thresh just totally dropped the game and doesn't know how to do any of the jumps, then i can see where you're coming from. The thing is though, I REALLY DOUBT that's true, and all the same i don't think you could touch thresh. :D

thresh isn't an opponent to purri, why would he want to study his demos?

That's too simple:  because he was a master at his craft.  There's always something to learn from a master, even if you have no plans to emulate him.  Why would an aspiring writer read Shakespeare or any of the other so-called classic writers?  What possible relevance could they have in our time? Do you understand, grasshopper?

« Reply #25 on: March 22, 2006, 02:16:54 PM »
Well, I think the bottom line is a couple of things.  First, it's all hypothetical.  Who the hell knows?  Secondly, though, it's not as if Thresh's life went into suspended animation, a la Austin Powers.  I'm sure he knows what's going on in Q2, at least obliquely.  And, he could easily practice up using an alias without so much as drawing a hint of suspicion.  Once ready (if he ever wanted to), he could simply say "I'm back".    But any competition would be a win-win for him.  If he came back and won against top tier players, that's obviously huge.  If he came back and was beaten by top-tier players, he'd have the easy excuse about retiring from the scene, etc., like a hall-of-fame ballplayer who stayed in the game a year or two too long.

Moreover, he'd be using the latest pc's, latest video cards, latest mice, latest Q2 clients with their latest Q2 options, etc., etc., etc.  It's not like he's 80 years old.

It's kind of funny to read the "his demos are boring" comments.  That's exactly what he refers to in his interview.  You guys are (most likely) the type who would fall right into his hands, as his philosophy of play was geared toward facing off against those who wanted rapid engagement.   Just like in any sport, throw off the other person's game cadence, and you've thrown them for a loop.

The real question is, against a superior aimer, would he even have the chance to play "slow-pa-dope"?

no. its not like thresh is the only person that plays like that.. i know many slow strategical players that are great but that doesn't mean they throw me off... for me, my style changes for each dif player i go up against.. if i play against someone fast like flarez.. im gonna match his style and play fast and action packed, fun filled too.. but if i go up against someone slow and smart like damiah, i end up playing slow and smart too.. no one's style in q2 will throw my game off, ill just adapt to their style and play to win.. which is fun imo.. thresh will be no different.
