R1Q2 co-op server crashing when 3.24/vanilla clients end UNIT
« on: December 26, 2015, 11:04:18 AM »
Sometimes I run a co-op server using r1q2 port (coz you can ban cheat commands via +addcommandban) but I noticed the server will crash with the message ERROR: Game Error: Couldn't find spawn point when the first unit ends (comm center). This only happens when the client is using 3.24 patch or the other vanilla versions. Clients using Q2pro, r1q2 etc have no issues.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

The server CFG file is pretty much:
Code: [Select]
set game baseq2
set coop 1
set deathmatch 0
set skill 3
set maxclients 8
set dmflags 16384
//set dmflags 5520
set logfile 3
//set rcon_password
set public 1
set allow_download "1"
set allow_download_players "1"

Wait a second... try swapping out 3.24 with anything below 3.23 (3.20 or Carmack's official 3.21 should be good). Tell me if that exact same problem continues.

Edit: By swapping out 3.24, I mean your server's game library inside baseq2. Change it to the stock 3.20 (or 3.21) game dll/so. I realize that this version might crash your biggun level, but this isn't a permanent change. I just want to know if that makes a difference with that error. Also test them with LAN enabled. Those versions have the buffer overflows in umsg problem.

Oh, and could you clarify: does the server crash only when there's a non-R1Q2/Q2Pro client(s) connected? Or just the client? The could not find spawnpoint thing might be unrelated as well. I remember playing loopback singleplayer R1Q2 on Windows, and I always saw that message come up a bunch of times during a cinematic change (unit end).

Thanks for your reply.

It's the server that crashes with that message. The client gets disconnected with the same message.

I tried running the server with a fresh install (Steam) and it still crashes at the end of the any unit.  I'm assuming the Steam version of game files are 3.21 or earlier but I'll have to double check (checked; it's the 3.20 version). I suspect this has something to do with that small video playback after the unit.

By the way, this is windows 7 I'm running r1q2 server from. Maybe if ran from Linux it doesn't have that issue? I'll try beating a unit on tastyspleen's coop server when I have a chance to see what happens there.

Unrelated question... Do you know how to disable cheats on a coop server? Having cheats, sv_cheats, sv_allow_cheats etc set to 0 doesn't seem to do anything. The cheats on a coop game always work regardless. This is the main reason I used the r1q2 port as a server.

Anyway, this is all for a casual server I sometimes run when I get that nostalgic itch to blow shit up. Hehe :evilgrin:
If tastyspleen's coop server had voting (i.e. 'mymap') I wouldn't even bother; I'd just play on there.
