Quake II Mac 10.8
« on: October 30, 2013, 10:45:04 PM »
Anyone know how I can get Quake II running on Mac 10.8? I have not played in a while and when I try to start it up, it says "an error has occurred: couldn't load pics/colormap.pcx'

It's the same quake II app and files I've been using for years and years, so it's gotta be 10.8.

Any help is much appreciated, thanks in advance!

this should be the file, in case it's just missing.

it goes in quake2\baseq2\pics

I think jdolan had a aprq2 port that was working on mac.. not sure tho.

I vaguely remember having that issue when I first tried to get Q2 to work on my Mac....

I am using fruitz of dojo or something like that, so let me know if you still have issues and I'll see if I can send you the exact files that are in my pics folder (I doubt they're different).

You can try my Quake2 build here:
https://github.com/jdolan/quake2

But I'm actually looking to EOL that project and instead provide Mac packages of Q2Pro. If you want to try compiling that, my fork of Q2Pro is available here:
https://github.com/jdolan/q2pro

My fork of Q2Pro is identical and in-sync with mainline Q2Pro development; my only changes are for Mac OS X support and packaging. Like I said, you'll have to compile it yourself at the moment, but fairly soon I'll have a .dmg file available for download. Might even get to it this weekend.

Good luck,

Jay

Jay, if you could walk me through the compiling instructions again, I might be interested in giving Q2Pro a try.  Or, I can wait for .dmg :)  Let me know!

Anyone know how I can get Quake II running on Mac 10.8? I have not played in a while and when I try to start it up, it says "an error has occurred: couldn't load pics/colormap.pcx'

typically that error indicates you're missing pak0.pak in your baseq2 folder. If you don't have a real copy of q2 around somewhere you can get that file from the demo version (it's just missing most of the single-player maps).

Quake II is not 27 years old. I refuse to accept THAT much time has gone by.

DM server is fucked. 2 point blank rockets from spawn and lava damage and player survived? WTF?" Also someone has fucked with the spawn points, every single time no matter how big the map you spawn right in front of the person who killed you last
