TDM vs FFA

i always seen the FFA players disputing idea like staying in a room as camping.. it just makes no sense to me.  FFA (Free For All) Basically says to me that it's "anything goes".  Also, when you think of it, all TDM players are, are players that came from FFA, and were intrested enough in the game to learn the different commands and functions the game provides to the users.  So to say using anything that isn't stock Q2 is somewhat cheating, it's like saying that getting your crew to tune up your car in NASCAR is cheating cause you're not using the "stock" functions that the orginal car came with, infact you're rigging it up for better performance to assist you in winning.  Also, can you honestly tell me that the reason 90% of the players are playing isn't to try and win along with having fun??

Thanks for the compliments, but I just don't see how using commands that are part of the game design be cheating or exploiting anything.  K so, I'm running a P4 3.0ghz all beefed up, and you're running an old P100 with no graphics card.. i don't see how it would be my own fault for researching the materials about the game to tweak it, or purchasing myself a nice computer that will run the video games I enjoy playing.  No one is forcing these players to live in the stone age.

FFA just means every man for himself, no teams etc.  Doesn't mean you can't play with a little tact, be a good sport about it.  I think that's a problem with a lot of TDM'ers.  They belittle the FFA format, and make a mockery of it when they play, by camping constantly, hogging quad, gathering up BFG cells like mad, etc.  I guess that's fun for them, so they're entitled to do so.  They don't seem to consider the fact that what they're doing is obnoxious, and annoying, and detrimental to a lot of other people's fun though.  I guess they don't care about that.  I just prefer a cleaner, more honorable game.  Where it's not about who can kill the most players fresh off a spawn pad.  Sure, they're fair game, but I don't think you should "wait" in an area, or near a weapon for anybody. 

If you hear someone coming, then sure, stick around.  I think some people dislike losing more than others, and thus will throw all ideas of fair play out the window.  Such as, is it fair play for a 30 pinger to camp the railgun on DM8 for example, and pick off people one by one as they round the corner without a weapon, going after the rail?  Is that really giving other players an opportunity to have fun too, to get the weapon they want to use, and go to town with it?

What I usually do, is if say I'm on DM8, and have just gotten the yellow armor, and someone spawns above the hyper.  I might kill them once with a quick rail shot, but I'm not about to keep killing them over and over and put them in a death loop, just to boost my frag count.  I'm gonna run off, gather some more ammo, health, shards, etc., and get into a real fight.  Find someone that wants me dead, and try to out maneuver, out aim, and finish them off before they get me.  That's fun, getting into a standoff, and coming out the victor.  Picking off people fresh from a spawn pad, specially over and over, doesn't make you feel skilled, doesn't improve your game, doesn't make you a good player, or a better player.  I mean, if you win a match, do you really feel good knowing you beat someone else when 50% of your score were kills against people with a blaster?  That just doesn't do much for me.

Anyway, to each their own.  Oh, and Element is certainly not above camping =P  Check out the screenshot where he beat me and Ely by a big amount on DM8.  Guess where he was the majority of that map?  At lower chain, with the railgun, with the rocket launcher, railgun, and 2 spawns pads to go for =P  Impressive tally of spawn frags, you da man! 

Don't get me wrong, Element is a good player, quite good, but I just wish I didn't have to do what I consider "camping", to be competitive.  Oh well, certainly within his right to play that way.

Alright, before I explain the differences between TDM vs FFA in my opinion.. im gonna make a few corrections...

There is not a huge emphasis on jumps in TDM like some of you have mentioned. riggs got 3rd place at quakecon... have you ever seen him jump?? lol.. and plus look at me, I can jump like crazy and am I the best?? nope..

Also, no offense, but i can name probably 30 tdm players that could beat the best FFA players here 9/10x on any map that both players know.

The mod truley does not matter in determining which players excell the most.

Guess what I was actually doing most of that map.. 

Watched the demo Element.  Guess I'm an idiot for assuming you were camping chaingun, specially with the accusation.  My appologies.  And boy, didn't I get whiney there at the end?  Guess I was whining based on my assumptions.  Nice play, nice rockets, nice rail.  Nice sound knowledge too.  I really need to start wearing headphones when I play.

One thing I noticed, is that I usually go for the yellow armor like all the time.  I don't think you ever did, or very rarely.  Didn't seem to stop you from getting kill after kill though.  I think what my problem was, was that everytime I went for yellow armor, Elysium was there, or some other good player, and that made it tougher to stay alive =P heh.

Anyway, again, I eat my words, I was foolish to make such an accusation without really knowing what happened.  I just remembered not seeing you much that game, probably cuz I was going to YA so much =P  Guess I was assuming you would have had to have camped a spawn area, in order to get that many kills.  Hope to get to play ya again soon.

I know I would never be good enough at 1x1/TDM play to ever consider it other than mostly frustrating... and because of that, it is NOT fun to play.
