The Seventh Seal is an old movie I stumbled upon at the video store (hah, remember those?) years ago.
Have you seen it? If not, put it on your list. WARNING: You need to pay attention to everything to get the deeper plot. Don't ruin it and read the reviews.

I haven't seen it before, but I've heard of it. From the title of the movie, I guess you could assume some deeper meaning in it as a reference to the book of Revelation and the seven seals, the seventh being the last seal opened which signifies the beginning of the final earthly punishment of the wicked by way of the seven vials. God really likes the number 7 for some weird reason.

Yea; this is a deep movie and the director puts together a collection of scenes and statements that are, at face value, almost unimportant and unrelated to the plot.  Pay attention to details and what is going on in the background. I guess different people will have different interpretations about what it all means. Reflex, you probably only needed to see it once to "get" all the deep stuff.

I remember looking this up after I saw it the first time and found....alas, there is no seventh seal. Revelation Chapter 6 says:

First Seal - The Conqueror
Second Seal - Conflict on Earth
Third Seal - Scarcity on Earth
Fourth Seal - Widespread death on Earth
Fifth Seal - The Cry of the Martyrs
Sixth Seal - Cosmic Disturbances

Not trying to start a theological discussion; I just thought it was an important footnote. I remember some metal band naming a song with a Bible Chapter:Verse number and finding that they also went one verse more than there was found in the particular chapter.

Perhaps you're using a different version of the bible... one that's had a few pages torn out.

Admittedly, the Book of Revelation can be EXTREMELY confusing to someone who reads it the first time and takes it at face value. There's a lot more metaphorical stuff going on than just what it says. But indeed there are seven seals. The sixth seal is opened at the end of chapter 6. Next, chapter 7 goes on to talk about the 144,000 who will be the only remaining faithful left on earth during the end times.

A bit of a digressing side note here:
The Jehovah's Witnesses actually take this chapter way more seriously than everyone else, and they believe that only 144,000 souls will be resurrected once Christ returns to reign for 1000 years on earth. I used to work with a guy who was a devout Jehovahs Witness. He was a great guy, I got along with him and actually loved working along side him. But we'd talk about religion every so often, and I remember one time him telling me about how ONLY 144,000 souls would actually be eligible for salvation from the period after Jesus' death and resurrection up until the return of Christ during the end times. Not exactly biblical... dunno how these people can justify discerning that tidbit of info from the prophecy... but hey, at least they aren't Mormon.

Next, the first part of chapter 8 picks back up with the opening of the seventh seal, which signifies the beginning of the seven trumpets prophesies, followed by the seven vial judgements.

My own copy of the King James Version is pretty nice because it has extra references in the margins for when a particular verse makes a metaphorical mention of something else in another book. It also breaks up the chapters and outlines them with titles to make it a little easier to understand how the storyline plays out chronologically. But anyway, just go back and look for chapter 8. The first 5 or 6 verses of that chapter talk about the seventh seal. If I remember correctly, the following seven trumpets are covered in the last half of chapter 8 and most of chapter 9.

One thing I've always found so frustrating about the Book of Revelation is the CONSTANT usage of symbolism at each and every turn. Unless you do some studying outside of the Bible itself, you're kinda tricked into taking it literally, which causes it to make NO FUCKING SENSE AT ALL. For example, if you didn't know any better, you'd think there was actually some leathery winged fire-breathing seven-headed dragon with ten horns sticking out of its head, when in fact it's most likely symbolic for Satan and seven powerful leaders who are in league with the AntiChrist.

Not to step on anyones toes who might actually believe this stuff, but personally I think ole St. John must've been eating some pretty serious mushrooms or licking toads.

LOL  How did you grab that before I deleted it? I was looking at a Bible that had the titles of the seals and thought I ran out at 6; posted, and then saw RIGHT THERE on the next page the seventh seal.  Then I started thinking that this thread may turn into a theological debate as well, and decided DELETE ASAP.  All I can say is I make mistakes and am not an expert on Revelations.

I saw you deleted it, figured you ended up reading a little further after posting and realized you missed it. Thought I'd comment on it anyway just to point out the interesting fact that there is a gap between the 6th and 7th seals. Speaking of debate, if there's any one book in the holy bible that's gonna draw a debate, it's definitely the book of Revelation. Personally, I ain't much for "debating" it since I'm not a christian and don't have a personal reason for believing one thing or another about any interpretation of it's words. But it still is kinda interesting how different people interpret it to have different meanings.

Not to step on anyone's toes, but I think it's kinda funny that anyone WOULD take the prophecy literally. People really think all of that is going to happen just as it's written? Like this AntiChrist guy is gonna be clever enough to gain power over EVERYONE, but dumb enough to not bother picking up a bible and saying, "Hmmm. This is what I'm expected to do... so instead, I'll just do something else. WINNING!" And EVERYONE is going to be completely fooled into worshiping the AntiChrist? I mean the Mayans have been gone for centuries, but people still remembered enough about them to get everyone panicked about the end of the world according to the bullshit Mayan calendar.

As far as viewpoints about Revelations, we could have that discussion in the Religion section. BTW, watch THE SEVENTH Seal if you get the opportunity.
