I don't understand the degree in which Trump's signing statement will nullify oversight, but it's insane if the democrats didn't know this would happen. All they accomplished was filling the stimulus with liberal pork.

On the flip side, trump has conservatives embracing socialistic policies. Is trump just a slow motion track to socialism opposed to the left fast-forwarding us there?

Sometimes I wonder if trump could be a Trojan horse. He used to be democrat after all.

Remember how just before Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump began their campaigns, the Clintons invited Trump over for some sort of off-the-record "meeting"? Even when they were at their most heated point during the campaign, I often (and STILL DO) wondered exactly what was discussed at that meeting.

Possibilities:
*An attempt to broker a deal to keep Trump from pursuing questions about email servers. (which obviously failed)
*Brokering a deal about "We won't discuss this, if you don't discuss that.", possibly a successful deal and we didn't hear about those items agreed to.
*A thousand other possibilities....

Unless the Clinton's are gullible (they're not really), I can't see them inviting Trump over for coffee and cupcakes and a "may the best man win" kind of handshake.

In an attempt to provide some reference, I've tried searching for "clintons meet with trump before campaign", but all I can find is shit about Trump + Russians and Hillary + Russians. ::)

Mike huckabee just tweeted something talking about this:

https://m.theepochtimes.com/the-closing-of-21-million-cell-phone-accounts-in-china-may-suggest-a-high-ccp-virus-death-toll_3281291.html

Here's the actual link he tweeted

https://www.westernjournal.com/uncensored-chinese-report-may-accidentally-revealed-millions-new-covid-deaths/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=huckabee&fbclid=IwAR2SIjZMfyXHLwyyuR9daMM8QfYQwsUFkIBjqPqItM5v2lVojR7ESyFR3rE

I don't think so. I don't see how they could intentionally close the accounts to cover it up, and then tell everyone how many accounts they closed if that were the case. It could be work related phones that were turned in and deactivated to save money.

Interesting site though. I like this one:

Chuck Norris Warns of Rebellion, Martial Law if America's COVID Strategy Doesn't Change

https://www.westernjournal.com/chuck-norris-warns-rebellion-martial-law-americas-covid-strategy-doesnt-change/

A viral epidemic. Chaos ensued. Futuristic street pirates now stalk the street. But one man stands up for justice. Chuck Norris. Powers Boothe. Clint Howard. And Rae Dawn Chong. MARTIAL LAW! Rated R!

Oh yeah, it's crazy to say that those 21 million users are all dead. After googling it more, people are trying to say "some" of the users are now dead, but I really don't see any evidence.

Bloomberg's media site provided an explanation a bit, however IF I was making a case for this having any truth to it I'd point out that it's funny that the guy who made all of his money in China was sure to get a story out about this ;)

Ah. I think I know why. Somebody posted something about a guy in China who's phone went dead and within 30-45 mins, the state police were there looking for him. And Quadz posted about anonymized phone data tracking peoples movements. I'd wager they shitcanned their phones so the state couldn't track them.

It DEFINITELY happened, I'm not making it up. I clearly remember watching the news report about it at the time. Strange that I can't find anything about it now, but then again, it was 5 or 6 years ago at this point and I didn't spend much time digging.

I remember thinking at the time that the Clintons might've been agreeing to pay him a certain amount if he "threw the game" after beating the more viable Republican candidates. But clearly that didn't happen. :D

A breakdown of when Trump just recently seemed boastful about the "ratings" of his recent press conferences:

A breakdown of when Trump just recently seemed boastful about the "ratings" of his recent press conferences:

Haha, man. Hasn't it been something to watch Pakman's tawdry descent into mendacious partisan hackery over the past few years? (I used to watch him along with TyT way-back-when.)

In any case, I suspect we can all agree Trump's comments about ratings are at best tone-deaf and inappropriate to the gravity of the situation.

That said, context still matters.

A week ago, the New York Times had put out an article describing Trump's daily briefings as a "ratings hit" whose viewership has "rivaled the audiences for hit reality shows and prime-time football."

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/25/business/media/trump-coronavirus-briefings-ratings.html

In that context, the NYT article was advocating something akin to deplatforming the President.

The article begins as follows. (Weasel-words highlighted in yellow.)

Quote from: Michael M. Grynbaum - New York Times
President Trump is a ratings hit, and some journalists and public health experts say that could be a dangerous thing.

Since reviving the daily White House briefing — a practice abandoned last year by an administration that bristles at outside scrutiny — Mr. Trump and his coronavirus updates have attracted an average audience of 8.5 million on cable news, roughly the viewership of the season finale of “The Bachelor.”

And the numbers are continuing to rise, driven by intense concern about the virus and the housebound status of millions of Americans who are practicing social distancing. On Monday, nearly 12.2 million people watched Mr. Trump’s briefing on CNN, Fox News and MSNBC, according to Nielsen — “Monday Night Football” numbers.

Millions more are watching on ABC, CBS, NBC and online streaming sites. (Because of the way Nielsen ratings are measured, reliable numbers are available only for cable news.)

Oh. OK, so Trump's "boastful remarks" were all but quoting The New York Times.

The remainder of the article then mounts an attack, suggesting the daily White House briefings should not be broadcast because they may contain misinformation.

Only one short paragraph in the article attempts to provide examples of said misinformation:

Quote from: Michael M. Grynbaum - New York Times
The president has suggested that the coronavirus is comparable to influenza, which is far less lethal, and has invoked the death toll of car accidents. He has also encouraged the use of medications that have yet to be proved effective against the virus; on Monday, a man in Arizona died after he and his wife consumed a form of chloroquine, a drug that Mr. Trump has promoted on the air.

Whoops, chloroquine was just approved by the FDA for emergency use: “It is reasonable to believe that chloroquine phosphate and hydroxychloroquine sulfate may be effective in treating COVID-19.''

And note the weasel wording "a form of" chloroquine. Because if they mentioned it was a fish-tank cleaner likely packaged in a box labeled "not for human consumption", well - why let pesky facts ruin a good narrative.

If there's anything remarkable about the NYT article and its quotes from Rachel Maddow and Ted Koppel, it is how little effort is made to hide its message: We're panicked that Trump's live briefings are popular, as this format precludes our ability to insert our own spin.

In any case: the point is, there was a clear context in which Trump's boastful remarks about ratings are taking place.

I wonder why our chum David Pakman chose to leave out the context.

Instead, Pakman describes Trump's remarks as, "another one of those horrible examples that shows Donald Trump's utter lack of concern for the human toll."

OK Pakman, you mendacious hack, I didn't vote for Trump, but here's a 90 second spot as a counterweight to your willful misrepresentations:

A couple of days ago CNN's Don Lemon said that CNN should not carry President Trumps briefings live, just provide details later.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4P0Ecp4rxcs

I was watching the President's briefing yesterday and decided to change over to CNN and they were not covering it so I flipped back to ABC.  As soon as the President stopped talking and turned it over to someone else on his team, I flipped back to CNN and saw them saying "Lets go to the national briefing"  CNN started their coverage as soon as the President finished his opening comments.  :lolsign: and  :dohdohdoh: :raincloud:

The C in CNN does not stand for comprehensive.

I remember the good ole days back in the 90's when you could tune to CNN and see fucking news. As in, "Hey, this happened here, that happened there. Now let's go to Blab Blabbidty-doo and check the weather." And it would repeat as necessary until the new updates dropped, usually at the regular times, 5pm, 10pm, etc. Now it's not "news" at all. It's just assholes in suits giving opinions.

Only one short paragraph in the article attempts to provide examples of said misinformation

That sounds more like a ding against the article for not supporting the claim, not that the claim itself doesn't have other forms of supporting evidence elsewhere.

Quote from: FDA
It is reasonable to believe that chloroquine phosphate and hydroxychloroquine sulfate may be effective in treating COVID-19.

That doesn't sound like a particularly strong endorsement to me. Sounds like typical Trump speak, honestly ("this could be a game changer, and it might not be"). Makes me wonder if the White House put pressure on the FDA behind the scenes to pass that. The EU hasn't made the same decision and is waiting for clinical trials. Yes, it's a form of, but where did the guy get the idea? I concede you can't blame his (or his wife's) stupidity on Trump, but if Trump wasn't touting it (wasn't it Trump that brought it up, not Fauci, Birx, etc.?), that wouldn't have happened - people trust Trump, even though he doesn't know what he's saying much of the time. If, in the end, it turns out that this medication is effective, what are the odds Trump doesn't gloat incessantly about how he was right all along? Contrast that with him refusing to take any responsibility for the other failings seen so far. "Trump always takes credit, but never responsibility."

Trump is and has been spreading misinformation at his news conferences, and it's hard to argue against the notion that it's taken a toll, though I don't think there'd be a way to ever measure the extent.

Instead, Pakman describes Trump's remarks as, "another one of those horrible examples that shows Donald Trump's utter lack of concern for the human toll."

Trump's first tweet (afaik) about this said that the media was going "crazy" because of his high ratings. Why did he bring that up? Is he saying that the media hates, i.e., is jealous, that his ratings are so high? That's what it sounds like to me. Is that entirely inconsistent with Pakman's comment? Trump thinks other people think like him, that they're bothered because Trump is getting all this attention, and not that it's simply because a lot of people take Trump's words over experts/doctors. When he, and all his cronies (Fox News, etc.), had been downplaying this issue, contrary to the messaging of practically (if not literally) all experts, for 2 months or more, there's a legitimate reason to be concerned about what information people are receiving with something as serious as this.

And look at that silly video in that tweet you shared, complete with the patriotic imagery, inspirational/emotional music score behind it - give me a break. I think he's just clueless how to empathize with other people, so the closest and best way he can fake it is by downplaying a serious issue, thereby giving people "false hope".
