New card, new problems...

Here's my problem: My 9800 pro video card was perfoming fine...as long as the fan was running full speed...which became intermittent and unpredictable. I got tired of trying to play and keep track of the fan speed. I bought a x700pro card and had a co-worker install it. He has much more experience and knowledge about these things than I do, and I trust that he is giving me an honest effort in making it work. I played it last night and encountered some major problems. At first it was so choppy as to be un-playable. I worked with the basic video settings and eventually got something close to what I had before the switch....yet still *$@(ed. This community is so helpfull in such matters I feel like I can get it sweet and smoooooth with the right advice. To be concise: I switched from a 9800 pro to a X700 pro video card and need some tips for tweeking it. I am only interested in the Q2 settings....that's all I'll be playing for the foreseeable future. Thanks in advance for your help......

I just put the resolution down to its lowest setting and it ran smooth as butter,
but who wants to play at 300somthing by 400something?
this should be pretty helpfull,

if all you are doing is quake, I have an old 64 meg nvidea card that ran q2 like a champ.

When I got my new/ish Card, it didn't run all to well with q2 because of the difference that 3D back then was made and how it is now.
I was recommended to check out these:
http://www.ngohq.com/home.php?page=Latest
The NGO tweaked drivers gave me, no joke, three times faster FPS in q2. I was running 26-36fps before using those drivers....now I'm up at 60-90 with alot of things going on in the game.
Give them a shot to see if it helps your situation anybit.
Cheers
Mark.

You may not have enough power to support the card.

Sounds like you've already fixed your problem, but Elysium mentions something about 9800 drivers on his first post here.

I don't worship the devil. Jesus is Lord, friend. He died for your sins. He will forgive you if you just ask.
