« on: August 10, 2012, 03:09:47 AM »
Hey guys i'm new to the Multiplayer side of Quake 2 i have tried installing q2Kicker to make my game look nicer but i never seems to work i have tried to follow the steps but they just make no sense to me what so ever if someone could simplify it so its understandable for a "Noob" like myself be much appreciated!

and two other things

I play on a 32inch LG TV (Overkill i know..) but i'm have trouble turning up the brightness any commands?

and how do i bind Keys to weapons because i tried this "bind r "use rocket launcher" it just doesnt seem to work.

Sorry about this guys just the games fun and i'm trying my hardest to get into this!

instead of the kicker try the r1q2 starter package located here:

http://q2s.tastyspleen.net

If you want to change brightness use the gl_modulate variable, kick it up to like 6 or something, then vid_restart... the console can be brought down with the ~ key if you didn't know.

Any config things you need to do can be put into an autoexec.cfg (a text file named that in baseq2) which will run automatically applying all the settings

Here is a thread with my config for an example of some stuff you can do with an autoexec.cfg in baseq2

http://tastyspleen.net/quake/forums/index.php?topic=18584.0

and here is a link to a page that will help get r1q2 variables for an autoexec.cfg if you go that route:

http://r-1.ch/q2config.php

I think the q2 starter also comes with q2sb which is a little server browser, or you can use http://tastyspleen.net/quake/servers/list.cgi as an online one for just tastyspleen network servers. Any tastyspleen network server can be jumped between with the "goto" chat command, such as "goto tourney2" or just "goto" for a list of servers and players, so a lot of us just /connect tastyspleen.net then goto and pick a server to play on

Forgetting vid_gamma and the intensity commands.
They have a lot to do with how the lighting looks.

This thread http://tastyspleen.net/quake/forums/index.php?topic=12164.0
Has some good info on tweaking how the game looks. It's a good read, settings start getting discussed about 4 posts down.

My personal settings are in there somewhere..
Good luck,  come on back with any more questions.

Welcome to multiplayer :)

before you do anything, set gl_coloredlightmaps to "0" , and also remember to do a vid_restart if you type these commands in-game/in console(you're fine if you type them in autoexec).

you should just leave your vid_gamma at the default setting "1", with intensity you want around 1.5-2.5 based on map(lighting mostly) and preference, gl_modulate from 3-8, similarly by map and preference.

Oh, and gl_polyblend 0 takes away the flashes when you pick up certain items, as well as the red flashes when damage is inflicted on you.

i personally think gl_coloredlightmaps around .3 looks pretty good too :) i use 0 myself... or like .05 which just adds enough things aren't gray... but .3 looks good, not too heavy but it lets you have the stylized lighting on the maps still

You need a bigger monitor. Quake2 is only compatible with 60 inch screens.

If you want to make the screen brighter  then go into your config.cfg folder and
look for a command that says  "Set Gl_modulate  xx" and the set the number higher.
I use 5 but you may need more or less.  Then save the file with your new setting once it is correct.  You can also do this in game with console.  Drop the console by using the tilde ~ key and make the command there.

As far a your rocket launcher bind not working is because you have added a quote mark at the beginning of the command.  Get rid of that.  Also,  depending on what Quake mod you are playing you may not need any quote marks at all.  (WODX doesn't need them).

Good to see new players play this game.

Porkchop: the 32 inch monitor isn't overkill, it's just a hindrance. It's nothing to do with the size, if you have a 32 inch CRT(monitor with a glass tube) then the overkill comment would be accurate. But not with a 32"inch LG HD, because you are undoubtedly dealing with display lag unknowingly while playing. I have a 32in" RCA for example, fairly new... Sometimes I hop on it to mess around on q2, to compare I am about 4x worse or so while using it than on my normal monitor...however, partly that is due to what the stretched/warped aspect ratio(wide screen) does in regard to mouse sensitivity horizontal v. vertical(of course you can get used to something like this and do decent, but I don't suggest it). I would assume it to be an analog v. digital comparison(and if not, something with the same concept)... in their simplest forms, digital is going to account for more specifics than analog...broken down to the single binary code digit of 0 or 1 in some of it's uses, opposed to analog which is a constant signal no matter what. The specifics accounted for with the LCD increase with it's size, and in turn the display lag increases. For q2 specifically(a game with a little bit of delay anyway) I'd scale the lag on LCD monitors as:

almost impossible to notice 17|--19--23--27--32--35--38--43--48--54| obviously noticeable, horrible/unplayable
                                                     |          |          |                  |
                                  not bad^ noticeable^    bad^        ^really bad

The best monitor for q2 is probably a 19 inch CRT or something.

...just so everyone knows.

lag on LCD monitors

Carmack discussed non-CRT monitor lag quite a bit in his last couple QuakeCon keynote addresses.  He's using high-speed video capture (like 500 frames/sec) to see how much time elapses between when you physically click a mouse button (or press a key, whatever) and when a change visibly appears on the screen.

In his recent talk (a couple weeks ago) he mentioned a few specific monitor brands that had low lag. (Hopefully the keynote is up on youtube now, I watched the live stream but didn't jot down any notes.)

The lag isn't (technically) related to monitor size, but rather how much processing/buffering the monitor hardware performs internally before showing the frame.

Carmack mentioned wanting game developers to try to lobby the monitor manufacturers to implement a standard whereby the monitor could be instructed by software (i.e. the driver on the PC) to go into low-latency minimal processing/buffering mode.

But until that becomes a standard, we'll have to shop for specific brands/models that have low lag.

Monitor lag? I've never noticed any kind of lag that wasn't latency related..  :help:

I've played on the non-laggy ones in a game where it's far more demanding to have a CRT over an LCD, in which exchanges are determined by the frame the majority of the time. It's still very noticeable with that, as in I can both see and feel the hesitation with every single input. Although for an fps it would be more applicable I'd think...unless tick rates sky rocket and exchanges start getting decided by-the-few-frames or so. In QL, frame priority actually can be fairly crucial... but not quite that much. And in q2 it's far less important, from the delay and the physics/gameplay/etc.

and I only say that it's a direct factor(screen size:display lag) just because I have experimented with it a lot. I'm open to it being an indirect factor and not directly proportionate as I was suggesting with the word 'dependent', but there's no denying that it's happening. I've even compared 54" 120hz, 240hz, and 60hz... the constant is just how much worse 54"+ is than anything else. Idk... are you saying that shitty hardware to produce each frame is just the norm, and THAT'S why size is affecting it? Because that would make sense.

How large is your lcd?

Here's the full 3.5 hour keynote:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wt-iVFxgFWk  ;D

I'll have to download it and scrub around to try to find the bit about monitors.

But anyway, there aren't any physical constraints I can think of that would add noticable lag based on monitor surface area.

The reasons I recall Carmack mentioning were that, the more features added to a monitor (3D ability, display enhancement filter settings, whatnot), the more of a digital processing pipeline that exists internally, in the form of intermediate frame buffers, adding delay from when the input signal arrives, to when the processing occurs, to when the image is finally displayed.

For applications like watching TV, you'd never notice a few frames of "lag", especially if they delayed the sound by a similar amount.  It really only affects gamers (and/or VR headsets.)

So presumably many such monitors were designed with a TV watching experience in mind.

Quake II is not 27 years old. I refuse to accept THAT much time has gone by.
